For 2000, United Way's fund-raiser campaign goal was $1.1 million.

At the end-of-year celebration Tuesday, it was announced that the goal had been reached and exceeded - $1,233,034 was raised.

For 42 years, the Kosciusko County United Way has continued to do good works, said board of directors president Steve Ross at Celebration 2000. They help fund 26 agencies in the county.

In recognition of board and committee members during the celebration, several awards were presented.

The volunteer of the year award was presented to Michael J. Kissane of Chore-Time Brock. Last year's award recipient, Kevin Deardorff, presented the award. "This is one of the highest" awards, said Deardorff.

The recipient of the award, he said, must participate in one or more United Way activities, have a positive impact on United Way, contribute to the mission of United Way and help strengthen the agencies within United Way.

"I'm very humble and grateful and I look forward to all your support next year," said Kissane upon receiving the award.

The Keyleader of the Year Award was given to Cassidy Rodnick, DePuy-Johnson & Johnson.

The Spirit Award went to Janet Chalfant, Maple Leaf Farms.

Campaign chairman for 2001 will be Toby Buck of Paragon Medical.

Deardorff also recognized the businesses and organizations that helped raise money for the United Way fund-raiser.

Bronze winners, who raised $25 to $49.99 per capita, are: Sofamor Danek Medtronics, Bertsch Services, Grace College and Seminary, Otis R. Bowen Center, Sun Metal, Miller's Merry Manor, Dekko Heating Technologies and Chore-Time Brock.

Silver awards were given to companies that raised $50 to $99.99 per capita and included: Kosciusko Community Hospital, Biomet Inc., Farmers State Bank, Mutual Federal Savings Bank, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Paragon Medical, Lakeland Community Services, First Source Bank, Mid-West Roll Forming, Dalton Foundry, Maple Leaf Farms, Spartech Plastics and Cardinal Center.

Gold went to those who raised $100 or more per capita and included: Combined Community Services, Lakeland Youth Center, CASA, American Red Cross, United Way, Zimmer, Teachers Credit Union, Spartech Industries, Othy Inc., Morton Powder Coatings, DePuy-Johnson & Johnson, Cargill, Lake City Bank, National City Bank, Whitley Products, Lake City Enterprises and GE-OEC Medical Systems.

The United Way staff gave out two of their own awards. Brad Bishop was recognized for his "excellence and remembrances of the past year" and Steve Ross was given a Santa Claus for securing parking in downtown Warsaw for the staff.

"The gift today is a Santa Claus for our Santa Claus," said Sandy Mafera, United Way, about Ross. [[In-content Ad]]
