United Steel Workers Attempting To Bring Union To Zimmer
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
According to Ted Sautter, organizing coordinator for District 7 of USW, he and about 10 other representatives decided to come to Warsaw because of disgruntled employees.
Sautter said employees who work in manufacturing lost their Good Friday as well as Christmas Eve as vacation days.
“The decision is theirs,” said Sautter. “They have rights under federal law.”
Police were called out to plants 4 and 5 on the west side of Warsaw in Boggs Industrial Park.
Sautter said security at Zimmer was looking to intimidate employees as well as them.
Security guards were posted near the USW representatives Tuesday afternoon.
Sautter said unions aren’t the reason jobs are being lost.
“Even if everyone in this country made minimum wage, we still couldn’t compete with China or Mexico,” said Sautter. “It’s about corporate greed.”
Sautter said Zimmer laid off people with nearly 30 years experience while keeping temporary employees.
The USW represents groups of employees at Dalton Foundry, DePuy and Spartech.
“We’ve had a union at DePuy since the early 1940s,” said Sautter. “We have a good working relationship with management there. We’ve never had a walk out. We’ve never had a work stoppage.”
The USW handed out a flyer stating there will be an informational meeting at the Hampton Inn Hotel in Warsaw at various points of the day today.
On the back of the flyer was a list of 35 things supervisors and employers were not allowed to do.
When called for comment, Zimmer declined.[[In-content Ad]]
