Last week as our oligarchy in Washington engaged in high praise of each other, hearty glad handing and good old-fashioned back slapping over a piece of garbage to fund the government, I was wondering how to make ends meet next year. They have this nifty thing called a deficit to pile on their profligacy, a luxury not afforded to me. The bill was touted as including "something for nearly everyone.”
The "nearly everyone' category excludes a rather large group of Americans. The group I'm referring to is my fellow senior citizens. As you may or may not know, but should, we received no cost of living increase for 2016. Supposedly, the reason the raise wasn't needed was due to a drop in gas prices. While this is true, apparently nothing else was considered in this idiotic equation. This group of geniuses, in whose hands our fates rest apparently, don’t realize that many seniors no longer drive and many of us cannot afford to go anywhere, nor feel like it.
What the geniuses didn't consider was increased Medicare premiums, non-covered healthcare, dental, vision and increases in car and house insurance. Kosciusko County initiated a wheel tax, my property taxes went up because of the price of farm land, which I don't have. In reality, I couldn't give my house away because of the agricultural hell hole next door. Food prices are ridiculously high, and there are silly things like cleaning supplies, toilet paper, toothpaste and other personal care items.
To add insult to injury, NIPSCO has asked for a rate hike to enrich stockholders. Our esteemed state oligarchy wants to increase gas taxes and add $1 to a pack of cigarettes. How about adding $1 to a game of golf and taxing country club fees? Take from the poor and give to the already rich. What a hell of a way to run a state and a country.
Right-wing conservatives are reported to be unhappy with the piece of trash bill the federal oligarchy passed last week. This old left-wing liberal isn't real happy with it either, although for vastly different reasons. Before any more money is appropriated for the Pentagon and Homeland Security bureaucracies, both need to face an audit.
In closing, after the shenanigans handed to Bernie Sanders by the Democratic National Committee and despicable chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, as far as this old liberal is concerned, President-elect Trump can start brushing up on his inaugural address. I refuse to vote for HRC. The DNC has forgotten its base. Democrats turned out in record numbers in 2008 for Obama, once we realized we'd elected a Trojan Horse, we stayed home and lost the House and then the Senate. We can continue to stay home, until we get our party back from Wall Street and special interests.
