Two Local Players To Compete In All-Star Game

The South Bend All-Star game, which features All-Area boys basketball players against All-Metro players, takes place tonight.
Of the 17 All-Area players, only three are from local teams: Warsaw junior guard Chris Wiggins, Triton senior Matt Savill and NorthWood senior forward Darin Nunemaker.
Players from the South Bend/Elkhart area comprise the All-Metro team.
The game starts at 7 p.m. at Bethel College's Wiekamp Center.
Wiggins is one of six All-Area players who cannot play in the game. Underclassmen may be selected but are ineligible to play.
The 6-foot-4 Wiggins delivered in every category for the Tigers, averaging 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He led the team in scoring and steals. He shot 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free-throw line. He hit 41 percent of his three-pointers.
Nunemaker turned in statistics nearly identical to Wiggins.
He led NorthWood with 14.2 points per game. He averaged 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 53 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free-throw line. He hit 42 percent of his three-pointers.
The 6-foot-2 Savill averaged 13.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 82 percent from the free-throw line and 45 percent from the field.
South Central's Jim Daubenheyer, who guided the Satellites to an 18-5 record, was named All-Area coach. Mishawaka Marian's Robb Berger, who led the Knights to an 18-4 record, was named All-Metro coach.
Elkhart Central's James Scott was named the Metro Player of the Year, while LaPorte's Steve Drabyn was named Area Player of the Year.
Drabyn scored 22.3 points and dished out 5.3 assists per game. He hit 92 percent of his free throws. Scott, considered one of the best defensive players in the northern part of the state, averaged 18.5 points per game. He helped lead Elkhart Central to the 4A state championship game.
