TVHS Receives $50K Grant from School Safety Program

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

MENTONE – Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. received a $50,000 grant from the Indiana Secured School Safety Grant program.
During the school board meeting Monday night, Superintendent Brett Boggs said in August a presentation was made to the board on the process of applying for the grant program. The dedicated state grant fund is administered by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to provide matching grants to school corporations.
On Nov. 1, Boggs said, Valley received the letter of notification from the Secured School Safety Board awarding TVSC a $50,000 grant. Combined with matching funds from Valley’s 2014 capital projects fund, Boggs said the grant will be used to address school safety and security needs identified last spring through the comprehensive school safety audit conducted at each of Valley’s schools.
The funds must be obligated no later than 12 months after the effective date of the subrecipient agreement, Boggs said. Grant funds will be disbursed to Valley when documentation of the expenditures has been received by the IDHS.
Board member Mark Wise said the letter of notification from the Secured School Safety Board seemed to indicate Valley had to have the money spent in 12 months. Boggs replied they only had to have it obligated in 12 months.
Bryan Murphy, board president, said administrators probably already had ideas on how to spend the money. Boggs said they do.
At the end of the meeting, the board asked Student Representative Brandon Murphy what was going on at the high school.
Murphy reported the Acer Tablets were in. They have their “ups and downs” but he said they were good resources to have in class.
“There’s still some issues to work out but as time goes on they will iron themselves out. In some of my classes, we’ve gone completely paperless,” Murphy reported.
In other business, the school board:
• Approved the student discipline rule and school board policy on bullying.
• Approved a revision to school board policy on “absence of duty.”
• Reviewed the staff use of social media policy. The board will approve the policy at its December meeting.
• Announced upcoming board meetings will be Dec. 9 at Mentone Elementary; Jan. 13 at Burket Educational Center; and Feb. 10 at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School. All meetings start at 6:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
