AKRON - As Tippecanoe Valley volleyball coach Jon Parker is quick to point out, his Vikings play strong against tough competition
Earlier in the season the Vikings took Three Rivers Conference champions North Miami and Southwood to three games before falling.
Thursday night, a night Valley used to honor its seniors, the Vikings took No. 8 Bremen to three games before falling 15-8, 8-15, 15-13.
"We've had eight matches go to a third game this season," Parker said. "We're so close to having a great season. I think we could easily have 22 wins."
The loss drops the Vikings to 17-13; Bremen improves to 21-5.
After watching the junior varsity contest go three games, and then sitting through a long Senior Night ceremony for the Vikings, Bremen quickly set the tone in the first game, jumping out to an 11-2 lead. Bremen won the first game 15-8.
"We started all seniors who hadn't all played together," Parker said when asked about Bremen's early lead. "We wanted to play all seniors the first game. The second game we went with our regular lineup and the kids fought hard in the final two games after struggling in the first game. We had them (Bremen) where we wanted them."
Compared to the first game, Valley's play in the second and third games was about as close as night and day.
The Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the second on service points from foreign exchange student Yoshemi Tomoyose, sophomore Kathy Prater and left-handed senior Kristi Rudd.
After Bremen won a sideout on Rudd's second serve, Lion junior Mista Bollman served up three points to tie the game. Valley then took a 4-3 lead. After Rudd served up two points to make it 7-4 in Valley's favor, Bremen came back and tied it at 7.
Valley went on to take a 12-8 lead before winning 15-8.
"I can't say enough about Jamie Doud as our setter," Parker said. "She just plays great volleyball up front for us. She's not real big, but she sets things up for us. Lynette (Wilcox) is so awesome up front. Get her the ball and she can do some great things with it."
Wilcox, a 5-foot-11 senior, finished the evening with six service points, 10 blocks and nine kills. Doud tallied 20 assists. Gast ended the game with two aces, six points, six kills and five blocks.
The Lions took a 3-1 lead in the third and final contest, before junior Lacey Stump served up three point to give Valley a 4-3 lead.
Just as back and forth as the second game was, so was the third.
After Valley's 4-3 lead, the score was tied at 4, 5, 12 and 13.
As Parker said, his Vikings had the eight-ranked Lions right where they wanted them.
Down 10-9, Doud served up three consecutive points, giving Valley a 12-10 lead. Sophomore Lindsey Huber then served up two points for the tie.
After winning a sideout, Wilcox had the opportunity to serve up a Valley win. Instead Bremen won a sideout, and Bollman served up Bremen's 13th point. Valley tied it at 13 before Gramm served up the last two points, the final being an ace, for the win.
Gramm led Bremen with 16 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces and 14 digs. Bollman tallied 32 assists, while senior Jackie LaFree added 14 digs and 10 kills.
Valley will be in action again Oct. 21 against Culver Girls Academy in the Rochester Sectional.
