MENTONE -ÊThe Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team held Triton to just six points in the first half on its way to a 64-33 victory Monday night.

Rhonda Doud and Tabitha Pratt combined for 13 points as Valley started the first frame with an 18-0 run.

Valley held Triton scoreless for over seven minutes until Brandi Ganshorn hit a field goal and converted it into a three-point play after nailing a free throw with just 23 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Going into the second, Valley held a commanding 21-3 lead after Rhonda Doud sank a three-pointer as buzzer sounded to end the first quarter.

The second frame was much like the first as Valley outscored Triton 12-3 in the quarter.

At the half, the Vikings held a 27-point lead over the Trojans, 33-6.

"We held them to just six points in the first half because we played a lot of different defenses," said Valley head coach Gary Teel. "We did a lot of defensive switching and the girls played aggressively. It was truly a team defense, with the girls helping each other by talking and doing a good job of blocking out."

Triton came out of the locker room and woke up in the second half, outscoring Valley 14-10 in the third quarter.

Betsy Salyer led Triton with four points, and Kendra Blackford added three points in the Triton third quarter effort.

At the end of the third frame, the Trojans trailed the Vikings 43-20.

Valley came alive again in the fourth quarter behind stong efforts from Doud, Pratt and Jennifer Studebaker as the Vikings outscored the Trojans 21-11.

Gwen Roberts led Triton in the fourth, scoring six of the Trojan's 11 fourth-quarter points.

In the end, Valley came out on top 64-33.

"We came out with a plan, and we stuck to that gameplan," said Teel. "We put pressure on the ball when we needed to. We came out like we did against Caston."

Doud led the Vikings, racking up 27 points, three rebounds, and four steals. Pratt added 13 points and three rebounds in the Valley victory.

For the Triton, Roberts and Salyer each scored six points while Melissa Nifong and Jamey Bell added five points each in the Trojan effort.

Salyer also led Triton with eight rebounds and one steal.

The Vikings the court again on Wednesday as they travel to Winamac for a 6 p.m. game, and the Trojans (1-5) face Bemen at 6 p.m. Wednesday in their next hoops contest. [[In-content Ad]]
