TV Grad Tyson Has New Haven In Sectional Finals

As teams advance in the postseason, the competition they face becomes tougher. When the 10-1 NorthWood Panthers square off against the 7-4 New Haven Bulldogs in Nappanee Friday night, the competition will be fierce.

Not only has New Haven coach Tyson Silveus tracked the Panthers all season, he has watched them play for years.

"I'm a Tippecanoe Valley graduate so I know quite a bit about NorthWood," said Silveus. "I've seen my brothers play against NorthWood, and we played them the past two years when I was at Angola. And I have tracked NorthWood all season."

However, just because Silveus knows what to expect does not mean his team will overlook the Panthers.

"Basically we will center our game plan around Charlie Roeder," said Silveus. "He's a division I player. We'll gear up for him and go from there. We're gonna do some things differently to defend him. We'll try to contain him inside the pocket, something other teams have not been able to do. We don't want to let him roll out; we'll try to keep the pressure on him."

Roeder, the NorthWood quarterback, has completed 112 passes for 1,929 yards. He also leads the Panthers in rushing with 902 yards on 121 carries. But Roeder is not the only threat NorthWood poses for the Bulldogs. Chaz Scherer has rushed for 829 yards and has 13 receptions for 237 yards. Brock Doty is one of Roeder's favorite targets with 532 yards on 30 catches. Andy Mitschelen is second in the Panther's receiving corps with 26 catches for 443 yards.

New Haven will focus on something other than Roeder as well -Êmiscues by the opponent.

"The biggest thing we will concentrate on in this game is taking advantage of their mistakes," said Silveus. "They're going to make some, we're going to make some. We'll just try to take advantage of it."

NorthWood will be trying to capitalize on New Haven's mistakes. The Panthers will look to David Higley to lead the "Black Crunch" defensive attack. To this point in the season, Higley has 98 tackles, three and a half sacks, and a fumble recovery. Tony Garl is close behind with 82 tackles.

"New Haven is the best opponent we have faced in the sectional so far," said NorthWood coach Rich Dodson. "They run the ball a lot, but they can throw the ball, too. Last week, Ty Stoppenhagen had 184 yards receiving with four touchdowns, so they can definitely throw the ball, too."

New Haven will look to Cory Jacquay to lead the Bulldog offensive attack. He leads all New Haven rushers with 1,226 yards on 191 carries. Quarterback Bill Barkimer is 69-of-141 passing for 1,122 yards and has rushed 104 times for 312 yards. Jacquay and Barkimer lead the team in touchdowns with nine each.

Barkimer's favorite target is Ty Stoppenhagen, who has 23 receptions for 396 yards. Chris Gengo has added 173 yards on seven catched this season.

Jacquay leads New Haven defensively as well with 95 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Zach Hoffman is close behind with 71 tackles, four sacks and two fumble recoveries.

New Haven finished the regular season just above .500 with a 5-4 record, but the Bulldogs defeated Lakeland (5-4) and Fort Wayne Concordia (2-7) in the first two sectional games to advance to the sectional final against NorthWood. On average, the Bulldogs have scored 26.6. points per game while allowing their opponents to score 24.4.

"NorthWood is more technically sound and they have more players than Concordia did last week," said Silveus. "There's also the tradition. NorthWood has a great tradition, and they are expected to be where they are right now; we're not. They're a very good team."

"New Haven is good offensively," said Dodson. "They played Norwell tough, and they lost by a touchdown. They played Homestead close and lost by a touchdown there, too. They play very tough and will be a real challenge.

"Our main focus will be to play good defense overall. New Haven has given up some points this season so if we can keep them from putting points on the board, I think we'll be OK."
