Tuition To Rise At Ivy Tech Campuses Statewide

Ivy Tech students will pay an additional $7.60 per credit hour beginning with summer classes. The increase was approved Thursday when the Board of Trustees of Ivy Tech State College met in Fort Wayne.
Students will be charged a total of $73.80 per credit hour for summer 2002 and the 2002-03 school year plus a $25 technology fee per semester.
Ivy Tech has 23 campuses state-wide including one in Warsaw.
In 1999 the trustees decreased tuition from $66.50 to $66.20 per credit hour. Yesterday's decision added $6.60 per credit hour and an additional temporary $1 fee to establish an emergency fund for the college's building and infrastructure needs.
The "emergency" dollar will be rescinded if the state restores the college's Repair and Rehabilitation funds, which were eliminated as part of the budget cutbacks announced in recent weeks.
The new technology fee has been imposed to help the college in light of the elimination of the state's appropriation for technology to colleges and universities.
The college has seen $11.7 million in appropriations cuts for technology, general operations and repair and rehabilitation of facilities.
Even with the increase, Ivy Tech's tuition remains the lowest of all public institutions of higher education in Indiana.
The Purdue University Board of Trustees is expected to vote on a proposed 10 percent student fee increase today.
The board's finance committee voted unanimously to recommend the increase Thursday. If approved, it would take effect at the fall semester.
Purdue expects to lose $100 million in state funding by mid-2003 because of Indiana's budget shortfall.
If the increase is approved, Purdue students from Indiana would pay $4,580 a year in total fees starting this fall, an increase of $416. Out-of-state students would pay $15,260, an increase of $1,388.
The average Ivy Tech student takes about seven credit hours. Increased costs for seven credit hours means means an additional $78.20 per semester.
Last year the state legislature froze the college's tuition in exchange for a $3 million increase in financial support.
Over the last 10 years Ivy Tech has increased tuition 31.6 percent. The six other state institutions have raised their rates an average of 72.5 percent. [[In-content Ad]]
