Truex To Head Waste Board
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Ron Truex was elected Kosciusko County Solid Waste District Board president, with Brad Jackson as vice president for the next year after several other candidates declined the positions, citing busy schedules.
Tuesday the board heard good news from county auditor and district financial controller Sue Ann Mitchell when she said the district was more than $52,000 to the good.
Leaving behind a year of financial uncertainty, the members were pleased with the report.
Mitchell advised the board she consulted with the bank regarding a "sweep" account, which is now costing more than it is bringing to the district. She said it was set up as a commerical account and should be set up as a government account.
District director Sue Studebaker said the building maintenance and repair account was not set high enough at $250. The amount was budgeted before the move to Union Street last fall.
Recently the building leased by Stafford's Solid Waste required electrical installation and repairs at a cost of $750.
The board approved a $1,000 transfer from the office supply account.
Studebaker said she was tracking down various grant expenditures that had been lumped into the general fund last year. She asked that these be held in separate accounts in the future.
True Value Hardware dropped off several gallons of new paint, which is available to the public. The donation includes exterior and interior latex paint, stains, varnishes and spray paint.
Educator Eric Sanson reported more 7,588 pounds of shoes were gathered during a recent recycling drive and all but 1,500 pounds was trucked away. The remaining shoes are available to any organization.
In other business, the board:
• Welcomed George Clemens, who replaced Joe Thallemer as Warsaw city council representatives.
• Heard that Tara Still of the Kosciusko County Health Department; Bob Knudsen, Syracuse; Mike Lewis, Lewis Salvage; Ron Shelton, R.R. Donnelley and Sons; Darci Zolman, Kosicusko County Soil and Water Conservation District; Tom Harmon, Biomet; Kirk Swaidner, Zimmer Inc.; Larry Martindale, DANA Corp., Syracuse; Jim Stafford, Stafford Solid Waste; Tony Schroeder, Ameri-Waste; Brian Redshaw, Syracuse; Edna Gamble, Winona Lake; and Julie Martin of Superior Excavating will serve on the citizens advisory committee. The committee meets monthly.
• Studebaker also said the newsletter would be ready for publication the last week of January.
The board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 a.m. Members include county commissioners Ron Truex, Brad Jackson and Avis Gunter; county council representative Maurice Beer; Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins; city council representative George Clemens; and Winona Lake council representative Rolly Ortega.
