There was a lot of good news at the Warsaw School Board meeting Monday night, including announcements of a community kick-off for the statebound high school teams, the donation of a fire truck, a National Merit semifinalist and grant money awarded.

Troy Akers, Warsaw Community High School principal, said the community kick-off will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Career Center gym for the boys soccer team and the girls and boys cross country teams.

The teams are traveling to state finals this weekend, with the soccer team playing at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at IUPUI.
The race for the boys cross country team starts at 1:45 p.m., with the girls running at 1 p.m. in Terre Haute.

Akers also recognized that WCHS student Alek J. Jansen was named a 2013 semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Commended WCHS students in the program included Savannah Cousins, Zachary Shepler and Connor Singery.

Warsaw Area Career Center Principal Ronna Kawsky requested the board approve the donation of a fire truck to the WACC’s fire rescue class, which it did.

“In collaboration with Fire Chief Mike Brubaker and fire rescue instructor Marc Huffer, the Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Department has donated a 1980 700-Series American LaFrance Ford fire truck to the Warsaw Area Career Center fire rescue program,” Kawsky said.

The fire truck will be used during practical application in the program, which is new to the WACC this school year.

Currently, the class has 24 students, including some girls, she said. The only person allowed to drive the truck is a firefighter or Huffer.

Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott told the board the truck doesn’t leave campus.

The board approved a total of $40,000 in grants awarded to the Washington STEM Academy from the Dekko Foundation as requested by Principal Tom Ray.

Half will go toward Science Central, and the other half will go toward the Kosciusko Lakes and Streams partnership.
Science Central will provide Washington teachers with continual opportunities to be engaged in practices they will need to teach science. The KLAS monies will provide educational programs for local lakes and streams to provide guidance, curriculum and programming to coordinate STEM programming, according to information provided.

A $6,000 donation to Washington from Teacher’s Credit Union and Karen Mayer also was approved by the board.
The money will promote Lego® Robotics, including TCU Lego kits, a sponsorship of a Lego Robotic Night with second- and third-grade students and parents, and provide TCU employees to judge projects slated for state competition and Lego Robotics curriculum.

The Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation donated $5,000 to the Claypool Early Learning Center, which the board approved.

The Church of the Good Shepherd, Winona Lake, donated $1,500 to Jefferson Elementary School to use for eye, dental and doctor appointments for students, which the board approved. This money can also be put toward shoes or any other student need.

The board also approved a $5,000 donation from TCU for lunches and supplies needed during the Warsaw Community Schools monthly Professional Learning Communities meetings.

WCHS Art Department Chair Andrew Tomasik announced Lakeview Middle School student Harshitha Bobba won the second annual art sticker contest. Five hundred color stickers were printed and are being distributed throughout the community to promote art for children.[[In-content Ad]]
