Triton's late Rally Falls Short In 63-61 loss
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
BOURBON -ÊTriton coach Mike McBride kept repeating the same phrase to anyone who would listen after Saturday night's 63-61 loss to John Glenn.
"I guess we needed two seconds," said McBride.
Triton trailed by as many as 14 midway through the final quarter.
The Trojans, spurred by a technical foul and missed Glenn free throws, found themselves trailing 63-61 with one second left.
After Glenn called a timeout it inbounded the ball three quarters down the length of the court. Triton's Cory McClarnon stole the ball, gathered and fired from 60 feet.
The result?
A miraculous make that would give Triton the one point win.
The problem for Triton?
The buzzer sounded a second before McClarnon could get his shot off.
The Trojans were fortunate to find themselves in a position to win at the end of the game. Triton looked lackadaisical for 29 minutes on Saturday night. Up until that point, the Trojans struggled from the field, missing open jumpers and bunnies in the lane.
The spark came in the form of a technical foul with 2:53 left when the Falcons' Brandon Adkins threw an elbow in the direction of Triton's Josh Moore after Adam Wannamacher nailed a jumper and was fouled on the play. A minor fracas occurred that ignited fans and players on both sides.
The momentum, which seemed to be heavily in Glenn's favor all night, shifted to Triton at that moment.
Wanemacher made good on the three-point play and Todd Blackford connected on the two technical free throws.
With that, the Falcons' lead shrunk from 14 to 9. The two teams traded baskets until the 1:27 mark when Triton began to put Glenn at the free throw line.
The Falcons were a robust 12 of 13 from the foul line in the first half. The second half was a different story as they shot a more modest 9 of 17. The disparity from the first half to the second half, especially in the fourth quarter, kept hope alive for the Trojans.
For the first 29 minutes Triton was also out hustled and out bodied for rebounds even if the numbers don't necessarily show it. While the Trojans never got on fire from the field for any stretch of the game, they did begin to give themselves second chances late in the contest.
Triton's Blackford missed a three-pointer but Braxton Barton was there to gather the offensive board and find Blackford who nailed a runner in the lane to narrow the gap to 59-53 with 56 seconds left.
On the Trojans' next possession Blackford was unsuccessful with another runner. This time Moore saved the ball from going out of bounds to Barton who nailed a three with 33.7 left to make it a one-possession game at 59-56.
With nine seconds left and trailing 62-58, Triton's Wanemacher shredded a porous half-court trap by Glenn to find Moore for the open three.
As the clock continued to run down Triton knocked the ball away causing a delay of game. The refs warned the Triton bench and stopped the clock with one second left.
As Glenn looked to inbound the ball and run the final second off, senior Daniel Kuhn was called for an intentional foul on the Falcons' Chris Horvath. The intentional not only gave Horvath two free throws but Glenn the ball back. Horvath made one of two before the outrageous final second ensued.
For three minutes Triton looked like world-beaters. For 29 they just looked beaten. After the game that's what coach McBride addressed.
"Tonight's game was like every game we've played so far this year," said McBride. "I don't think we've put together a complete game yet. I don't know what it will take. I'm not sure if we need someone to come in before the game and rough our guys up."
That of course is in reference to the technical foul that seemed to light a fire up his team.
"However we did some good things out there that we can build on," he said, "and hopefully we can take those in to next week against Culver."
Triton now 4-5 hosts the 1-7 Cavaliers Friday night at 8pm. Both teams will be looking for their first NSC win.
