CULVER - The boys basketball team at Triton went out of their way to give Joe Bennett a special Christmas present.

They gave Bennett, their coach, a piece of string. But not just any piece of string.

After a 44-38 come-from-behind victory over Caston in the championship game of the Culver Holiday Tournament, the Trojans cut down one of the nets. Bennett, the last man with scissors in hand, was greeted by a deafening roar from the Bourbon contingent as well as a hug from Matt Savill.

Triton (4-2) last won the tournament in 1996. Caston (4-2) entered ranked 12th in the 1A poll.

Triton outscored the Comets 19-5 in the final frame en route to their fourth victory of the season. Brandon Zeider paced the Trojans with 10 points, Brent Thomas scored 10 points for Caston.

The Trojans found themselves up 6-2 early but Caston rattled off an 8-0 run accounting for the 10-6 score at quarter's end.

The two teams battled back and forth in the second stanza starting with a Savill three-pointer that drew Triton within one. The remaining seven and a half minutes of the second quarter was an 11-10 see-saw battle won by Caston pushing their halftime advantage to five.

The low scoring continued into the third frame, and by quarter's end Caston led 33-25. The Comets scored five points in the final eight minutes of the game.

With 6:11 remaining in the final frame Christopher Phelps added a basket for the Comets, Caston wouldn't score again until just 21 seconds remained. Over the last six minutes of the game Triton outscored the Comets 17-3 diminishing an earlier 31-21 deficit.

For the game Triton shot 14 of 41 (34.1 percent) from the floor and 13 of 18 (72.2 percent) at the charity stripe. Caston shot 13 of 40 (32.5 percent ) from the floor and just five of eight at the free throw line as the Trojans only committed 14 violations.

Triton (4-2) will be off until hosting conference foe Glenn Jan. 8. [[In-content Ad]]
