Triton Tops Manchester
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊOn a night when Ashli Senff set a new career scoring record, Triton picked up a 56-41 win over the Manchester Squires.
However, the outcome of the game was not always so cut-and-dried.
After one quarter of play, Triton held a 9-2 lead, but Manchester caught fire in the second frame.
After Triton's Ashley Zelt hit a free throw, Manchester's Casey Thomas nailed a three-pointer and her teammate Britt Rager hit a basket to cut Triton's lead to three, 10-7.
Senff and Gina Westafer hit back-to-back baskets to increase the Trojan lead to seven, 14-7, but Manchester roared back again.
Megan Hoch hit a free throw and Sarah Purdy netted a basket to cut the lead back down to four, 14-10, with 2:51 left in the first half.
In the final few minutes of the second quarter, Manchester and Triton played even. That is, until Thomas sank a three-pointer with just over a second left in the frame to make it a one-point game at the half, 17-16 in Triton's favor.
Rager opened the second half with a basket that gave Manchester its first and only lead of the game, 18-17.
However, that lead was short-lived as Gina Westafer hit a three-pointer to restore Triton's lead.
From that point on, the quarter belonged to Triton, or more specifically Senff. The Trojans outscored the squires 26-12 in the third quarter as Senff caught fire. She was a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field, including a three pointer, and hit one free throw for 16 points.
By the end of the third frame, Triton held a 43-28 lead.
The teams traded baskets for much of the fourth frame, with each team scoring 13 points in the quarter.
However, Manchester was unable to dig out of the deficit built in the third frame.
"We had some pretty good play at times in the first half," said Manchester coach Mark Underwood. "In the second half, especially the third quarter, we let down and they were able to get us. Their dribble penetration hurt us."
"We executed well in the second half," said Triton coach mark Heeter. "Our defensive execution led to offensive execution. I think our press got to them in the third quarter. We were able to create a lot of turnovers, and once we got the big lead I thought we were in good shape."
The win moves Triton's record to 13-4 overall, while Manchester falls to 4-15. The Trojans hit the court again Saturday when they host Jimtown. The Squires are also in action Saturday when they travel to Akron for a game with Tippecanoe Valley.
"Manchester is going to be a good team," said Heeter. "I think next year they will be at least .500, and even better after that. They have a lot of young players, and I was impressed."
