BOURBON – A week off for spring break may be nice for students, but it’s not so nice for softball teams.
Playing without a practice since March 31, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings (2-2) fell 10-0 in six innings at Triton (4-2) Monday.
“I hate to use that as an excuse, but this is the worst we’ve played,” Tippecanoe Valley coach John Strong said.
Giving up 10 runs, only three of which were earned, the Lady Vikings’ defense committed eight errors.
“We need to get back and do some serious practicing,” Strong said.
While Valley’s defense was out of sorts, the Triton Lady Trojans’ defense was much better, not committing any errors.
“This is what we envision,” Triton coach Steve McBride said. “It’s a pretty simple game. If you throw strikes, don’t walk lead-off batters and don’t commit errors, it’s not going to guarantee you a win, but you should be in the ball game.”
Freshman pitcher Mallorie Jennings got the win for the Lady Trojans, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. At the plate, Jennings went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
“She did a nice job of getting movement on her pitches,” Strong said about Jennings’ day. “She does a nice job.”
Along with Jennings’ production, Triton also received offensive output from senior Katie Claxon, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI, and junior Sabrina Kauffman, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
For Valley, senior Chrissy Hilliard was the only offense, posting all three of the Lady Vikings’ hits, including a double.
“We struggled offensively and defensively,” Strong said.
After seeing his team struggle in so many areas, Strong is looking forward to getting back to practice.
“We only have up three earned runs and lost 10-0,” he said. “There’s something wrong there. Basically, we need to get back and work on all the fundamentals.”
Strong’s view of his team’s play was a polar opposite of McBride’s.
“This was a good team effort,” McBride said. “We’re happy.”
Valley travels to Winamac Wednesday, while Triton’s next game is Thursday at Caston.
