BOURBON - In a sport where momentum is as important as Michael Jordan was to the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s, Triton's volleyball team simply had it at the right time in Saturday's Triton 2A Regional championship match with North Miami.

In their first year in Class 2A, the tenth-ranked Trojans won the program's first regional title by coming back from a 15-12 loss in the first game of the championship match by winning the second and third games 15-8, 15-2.

"This one was sweet," Triton coach Gayle Perry said. "The girls wanted to win, they weren't going to lose. When they decided that things started to happen."

The win ups the Trojans' season record to 27-10 and advances them to Saturday's state finals at Indianapolis Ben Davis High School, where Triton will play No. 2 Muncie Burris (32-6). Muncie Burris, winners of the last four state titles and 12 overall, advanced by defeating Clinton Central 15-7, 15-1 in the Oak Hill Regional.

For Triton High School, made up of tiny communities Bourbon, Etna Green and Tippecanoe, trips to the state finals have become commonplace.

Triton's girls basketball team, for which Perry is an assistant, has won the last two state titles, while the baseball team won last year's state championship.

North Miami, which advanced to Saturday's final by topping Boone Grove 15-6, 15-12 in the semifinal round, took a 2-0 lead on Triton in the title tilt when junior Michelle Monti served up two aces. The Trojans came right back with a pair of aces from senior Ashley Boardman.

The teams were tied at 3 and 5 before Triton took a 7-6 lead. Starting with an ace, senior Lindsey Connor served up four straight points to give the Warriors a 13-8 lead. With sophomore Mandy Beals serving, Conner picked up the kill that gave the 15-12 win to the Warriors.

"I thought we played very well in Game 1," said North Miami coach Steve Linn. "We battled in Game 2, and then Triton just took it to us."

North Miami, which won its first volleyball sectional title last Saturday, ends the season at 24-11.

North Miami took a 4-1 lead in the second game before an Ashli Senff kill and three Terrin Meister service aces gave the Trojans a 7-4 lead.

The Warriors cut the lead to 10-8, but Triton senior Amber Feldman served up five straight points, highlighted by kills from Gina Westafer and Senff, to send the game into the third set.

"We were relieved to win the second game," Perry said. "The third game we didn't get into much trouble. Terrin Meister played well at middle blocker and Gina Westafer did a great job at the net."

In what is commonly referred to as a rubber match, it was clearly Triton that bounced back.

Senior Beth Workman served up the game's first point. After a sideout with Warrior sophomore Abby Conner serving, Feldman served up 10 straight points for an 11-0 lead.

North Miami cut the lead to 13-1 with junior Jena Hartley serving, but a Senff kill earned a sideout. North Miami cut the lead to 13-2 when junior Brianne Sunday served up an ace.

"It's a disappointing moment right now, but in the long run we'll reflect on what's been a special season," Linn said. "It's been a real rewarding season. We wanted to go back and practice another week."

Workman served up an ace to give Triton a 14-2 advantage, and then Meister powered down the winning kill with Feldman serving.

Senff totaled 11 kills, and five digs for Triton in the title match, while Westafer and Feldman had nine kills each. Feldman also totaled six digs. Workman led the Trojans with 34 assists.

Triton plays Muncie Burris Saturday at 9 a.m. No. 1 Mitchell (34-0) and No. 9 Monrovia (26-7) play the second semifinal, with the winners meeting at 4 p.m. at Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse for the state championship.
