CULVER - Outplayed, outsized and outgunned. That describes South Central's night against Triton in the semifinals of the Culver Girls Sectional Friday.
Triton started the game with a 15-0 run and never looked back in toppling South Central 78-42.
"We talked about getting out to a quick start before the game," Triton head coach Mark Heeter said. "We didn't want South Central to have any inkling that they could stay with us."
In the first half alone, Triton had 12 steals, five from senior center Jessica Kintzel. The Trojans also controlled the rebounding department with a 23-12 rebounding edge in the first half. Triton had the height advantage, and that kept any South Central player from getting inside.
Forced to shoot mainly jumpers, the Satellites were taken out of the game early. They shot 30 percent from the field in the first half, and Triton shot worse than South Central from the field in the first half, the Trojans had 10 more baskets on 21 more attempts.
The Trojans also controlled almost every other facet of the game. They had six more assists, committed 10 less turnovers and picked up three less fouls.
According to Heeter, his team was determined not to have a letdown against this same South Central team that Triton beat 69-47 a week ago.
"We wanted to come out and make a statement. Fortunately, we were able to do that."
The Satellites came out in the second half and were able to do more positive things than they did in the first half. But so did Triton.
Triton began to shoot the ball much better and cause more turnovers. The Trojans did much of this with their starters on the bench. Substitutes Gwen Roberts and Kelli Hackett came off the bench to score 11 and 10 points respectively. Triton had 34 bench points compared to South Central's 11.
Triton also began to get steals in bunches. The Trojans finished the game with 24 steals with the main culprits being Kintzel and Megan Sarber with seven each.
Triton was also able to score at will, and it started the fourth quarter with a 12-3 run. South Central continued to struggle with everything. Free throws were the lone bright spot for the Satellites by going to the line 37 times. However, they made just 18 and shot 11 of 41 from the field.
Heeter went deep into his bench in the fourth quarter and was able to extend the lead, outscoring South Central 25-14 in the final stanza.
Triton (14-8) will play Argos, who upset Michigan City Marquette, tonight at 8. for the right to be called sectional champs.
"To be honest, we were looking toward Michigan City Marquette if we won," Heeter said. "But luckily, we have played Argos. They know us and it's a great rivalry."
The winner will move on to the Triton Regional. [[In-content Ad]]
