BOURBON - Triton School Corp. 10th grade students taking the ISTEP+ Graduation Qualifying Exam for 2000 ranked 80th out of 386 public high schools in the state - the second highest rank in the area, with Manchester ranking 33rd.
ISTEP's GQE results came out in January, naming Manchester High School the highest ranked in the area with 75.21 percent of their sophomores passing the GQE. Triton followed with 68.69 percent, then Wawasee with 66.32 percent, Warsaw with 63.28 percent, Whitko with 62.35 percent and Tippecanoe Valley with 55.63 percent.
Triton Junior-Senior High School guidance counselor Hugh Rettinger gave a brief ISTEP overview Monday at the school board meeting.
He said he believes they are on the right track with the ISTEP testing.
Rettinger passed out a class record sheet showing that Triton students ranked above the anticipated level in the majority of categories.
The anticipated level is a "nationally normed" level, he said.
"You'll notice we're basically in the plus in every category," Rettinger told board members. "We're definitely moving in the right direction."
He also reported that 92 percent of Triton seniors are passing the ISTEPs as compared to 87 percent last year.
Currently, six seniors have not yet passed the ISTEP test; nine did not pass last year.
"In May we'll know how this class finishes out," Rettinger said.
"Is this ISTEP going to go on forever?" board member Dave Shively asked.
"I don't see them backing down in the near future," Rettinger said.
In other business:
• Superintendent Rex Roth reported to school board members that the new bus garage "is essentially completed." He said it is not yet in use, but they are working toward that goal.
Roth also gave a brief report on gas and electric costs paid out by the school corporation. What he found interesting, he said, was that the high school's gas cost more than doubled in January from 2000 to 2001. Cost was $7,209 in January 2000 and $14,762 this January. He said these high costs also can be found in homes.
Board president Steve Blackford said electric costs haven't changed much. "As far as rates, they're been pretty steady," he said.
• Board members approved a $3,000 donation from DePuy Inc. for equipment to be used in Sam Davidson's class at the high school. The equipment ordered includes computer hardware and software.
• Triton Elementary School principal Tom Bowers said the elementary will have a Valentine's breakfast Feb. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Board members were invited.
• Triton Junior-Senior High School Principal Ted Chittum said the seventh and eighth grade science fair will take place today.
He also reported that 80 students in seventh through 12th grades were chosen as leaders for an all-day seminar on leadership to take place Thursday.
• Chittum reported that Ryan Treischman, Triton Junior-Senior High School senior, received an award through Prudential Insurance for volunteer work in the community. Chittum said he completed sketches for downtown businesses for fire safety, exits, windows, etc. He said Treischman's work took 200 hours.
• A Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer class will be offered next year at the junior-senior high school, Chittum told board members. This is made possible through a partnership with Integration Group, Plymouth.
"We're offering the space and Vincennes is letting us use the equipment," Chittum said. "We're really getting the bang for our buck."
The course will be a college-certified course and students from Argos, Plymouth and Laville will be able to participate.
• Board members granted Roth permission to advertise for school buses. Roth said two units are scheduled to be purchased this year.
• School board members approved the following: 2001-2002 school calendar; Alta Grossman to retire at the end of this school year; a medical leave request from Karen Anthony; Reghan Kreft as junior high school boys track coach; Sisteen Christian and Frank Yankovich as volunteer assistant track coaches; and a fifth-grade trip April 26 and 27 to Camp Amigo.
Triton School Board members are: president Steve Blackford, vice president Steve Feldman, secretary Larry Lemler, Dave Shively and Kevin Boyer. Superintendent is Rex Roth. Corporation treasurer is Janet Barker. [[In-content Ad]]
