Triton held LaVille on a fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line with less than two minutes left in regulation to hang on for a 14-6 victory.[[In-content Ad]]"I am proud of the way the guys hung there tonight," Triton coach Rodney Younis said. "They never gave up even when we were down, especially on the goal-line stand."
The Trojans stopped the Lancers' Spencer Kubiak with his second-straight attempt from the two-yard line. Needing two yards, Kubiak got just one, securing the game for Triton.
"I thought we got a couple of bad spots inside the five," LaVille coach Jason Porter said. "We just gave the ball to the guy who had the hot hand and was sure we would score."
Triton appeared as though it would run away with the game as it did earlier in the year when they beat Laville 34-0. On the opening drive, the Trojans marched down the field on a drive that took over seven minutes.
As the Trojans drove to the Lancer 17-yard line and faced a fourth-and-one situation, Cale Kennedy dove through for one yard just short of the first down and turned the ball over to LaVille with 4:47 left in the first.
"They did this in the game earlier this year. I think they drove down to the 10 and we stopped them. We did a much better job tonight. I will have to blame the coaches for the loss we took earlier to them this year," Coach Porter said.
Coach Younis agreed, "We expected a dogfight from them tonight. You have to give credit for the job LaVille did. They played us pretty tough tonight."
The Triton defense held the LaVille offense to less than 60 yards in the first half. The Lancers amassed 136 yards total.
"Our defense did a great job tonight. The key to winning is to not blow your assignments and they didn't tonight. I am proud of them," Younis said.
LaVille struck blood first as they took the second-half kickoff and drove down the field for the first score.
Colton Priser hit Kubiak for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The drive took 18 plays and over nine minutes to put the Lancers up 6-0.
Following the score, the Trojans struck back three plays later when Zac Moriarty took a pass from Dane Kennedy and raced 50 yards for the score to take 7-6 lead with 12:58 left to play in the game.
"We just never gave up. We kept our heads high and kept our heads in the game. It allowed us to be prepared for the goal-line stand late in the game and we just didn't get down," Younis said.
Triton capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Adam Creighbaum scored from the 1-yard line. Sebastian Mueller kicked his second extra point of the night with 6:15 left in the game to give the Trojans a 14-6 lead.
Creighbaum finished with 104 yards on 18 carries. He also competed 2-of-4 passes, one of which went for 54 yards.
"Adam is a running back and we played him at quarterback because we needed the sophomore Dane Kennedy to get some experience and he came up big for us tonight," Younis said.
The 7-4 Trojans advance to next Friday's sectional final at South Newton, a 48-0 victor over Lake Station Friday.
LaVille finishes the season at 3-8.
"We turned around toward the end of the season as we took on some pretty powerful teams on the top half of our conference. We did a nice job improving with each game to get us where we go," Porter said.
