Triton took the lead in overtime when Chad Ulmer scored from four yards out, but Caston denied the extra point attempt as senior quarterback Troy McIntyre tried to run into the end zone following a high snap.[[In-content Ad]]"Most first games are pretty ugly, but this one was uglier than I like. We had a lot of players tonight that made their first varsity starts," Triton coach Rodney Younis said.
Triton overcame six fumbles in the second quarter, keeping the game close, but the Comets could only recover two of them. Those were the only turnovers for Triton for the night.
During regulation, Triton had a chance to win the game with 4.2 seconds left remaining, but Tyler Brosa's attempted a 32-yard field goal fell short, forcing the overtime period.
"I am really proud of the way this team played tonight. They never gave up and played with a lot of heart," Younis said.
Ulmer finished the game with 100 yards on 21 carries, including a 39-yard run that set up Triton's only score in regulation along with the winning score.
"Chad Ulmer ran his heart out tonight. Another offensive player that played well tonight was Colt Coldon on the offensive line. We also got some nice play form Brent Houlihan who is a sophomore," Younis said.
In the early going, Caston struck first blood when Pulliam hit Austin Ault down the left side for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was made by Cody Graham to put the Comets up 7-0. The score remained the same at halftime.
Penalties continued to hurt drives by Triton throughout the first half. Every opportunity the Trojans had to get a good drive going, a penalty would hurt their chances for any scores.
"Mondays are usually our run days for penalties. We continued to shoot ourselves in the foot and end up playing catch up on all of our yards. Once the run they will remember to be more patient," Younis said.
McIntyre finished the game with 1-for-5 passing for only one yard. The Comets constantly put pressure on McIntyre causing him to scramble out of the backfield.
"One thing we didn't work on as much in two-a-days was passing. We were concentrating on fundamental and the timing of the running game. In the second quarter, when we couldn't get our running gasme going, I felt we needed to pass to open up the field. They just kept blitzing the linebackers," Younis said.
Borsa intercepted a pass from Pulliam late in the fourth quarter to set up the field goal attempt.
"Tyler came up big for us defensively escpecially with that pick in the fourth. Clint Woodward our leader and middle linebacker did an excellent job of containing (Ethan Zartman) their big man," Younis said.
Triton will take on Northfield, whose roster list 22 seniors.
"Next week will be a tough contest for us against Northfield," Younis said.
