BOURBON - Triton School Board approved a 2.1 percent raise for all school corporation employees Monday.
Along with the pay raises came an increase in employee health insurance contributions of $250 for single employees and $350 for employees with families. The board also approved a 2.1 percent salary increase for all school administrators except Triton Junior-Senior High School assistant principal Glenn Weidner, whose salary will stay the same.
The increase boosts the administrators' earnings to the following totals: elementary principal Tom Bowers, $72,640; elementary assistant principal Kay Lattimer, $60,142; Junior-Senior High School principal Mike Chobanov, $77,000; assistant principal Glenn Weidner $69,750; athletic director Mike Byron, $62,141; schools superintendent Ted Chittum, $89,848.
The board also heard a review from Chittum of its goals. The board has three goals: Educate each student to reach his/her highest potential; provide educational value to students while maintaining fiscal responsibility to the school community; and enhance and expand educational programs by updating facilities and technology for the future.
Chittum said he believes there is evidence that the school corporation is working to reach these goals and cited the junior-senior high school's new laptop computers with wireless Internet capability as an example of the school taking steps toward the goal dealing with the expansion of technology. The new computers are available for students' use in the classroom and, according to Chittum, teachers at the school said they have been able to integrate computer and Internet use into their classes much more than before. "It's working very well," he said.
Patron Cliff Liter addressed the board with some questions concerning the building project being examined. Liter said he believes the board may have unofficially decided to accept the project and that he has some questions about it.
"What is this doing that is going to help our kids learn better?" he asked. Liter said he examined the proposals and prices for the project and found several areas he thinks are unnecessary, including the proposal to replace the electrical system in the junior-senior high school. Liter said he believes there aren't enough questions being asked about the project and encouraged the board to get out and talk to people in the community about it.
Also on Monday, Mike Chobanov began work as Triton Junior-Senior High School's new principal. Chobanov said he spent the day meeting with each class and hearing students' concerns for the school. He said he will probably spend much of the week observing classes and getting to know teachers and students. [[In-content Ad]]
