BOURBON - Triton High School students found a change in the usual first-day routine. according to principal Rick Dehne.

"Usually, they come in and get their handbook and 'Here are the rules,' and they go on to the next teacher and it's the same thing," he said.

According to Dehne, this year, doughnuts were ordered and time was provided for students to relax and catch up with classmates as well as deal with bar codes, schedule changes and other last-minute details.

"We ought to celebrate these kids coming back," said Dehne.

Kindergarten screening begins today at Triton Elementary School and will continue through Thursday. Incoming kindergartners will be screened to identify those who may need more time for language arts skills as candidates for the limited number of spots in the extended-day kindergarten.

During screening, parents meet with their child's teacher. A new addition to the screening process this year, according to principal Tom Bowers, is a home-visit kindergartners and their families will receive from the child's teacher.

"Teachers will meet the child and their family at their home to answer any questions and assure these kids that kindergarten will be a positive experience. It's just one more way to connect positively with the children, just one more chance to connect with the family," Bowers said.

The Triton School Corp. took a step forward Monday in its high school renovation project. The board signed contracts with IceMiller Legal and Business Advisors for bond council, H.J. Umbaugh & Associates for financial advisory services, Odle McGuire & Shook Corp. for architectural services and Schmidt Associates Inc. for engineering services.

In other news, the board approved:

• A resolution allowing Triton School Corp. employees the option of increasing at a pre-tax rate their contributions to their retirement funds.

• The resignation of Triton High School math teacher Kim Kincaid and the recommendation of Megan Hammond to be hired for the position.

• The list of lay coaches for the fall 2003 season.

• The list of fund-raisers for 2003-2004.

• A contract with IceMiller Legal and Business Advisors for bond service for severance retirement buyout.

The next meeting of the Triton School Board will be Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Triton School Corp. Administration Office. Board members are president Kevin Boyer, Dave Shively, Steve Feldman, Larry Lemler and Steve Blackford. [[In-content Ad]]
