Triton Hitters Crush Culver Pitching

BOURBON - Rule No. 1 when playing the Triton Trojans: Don't throw a fastball down the middle. The Culver Cavaliers learned that the hard way.
Triton battered Culver pitching for eight runs in four innings in Wednesday's 8-5 win. The Trojans hit the ball hard all afternoon with a home run over the center-field wall and numerous rips to the gaps. Even when Triton grounded out, the Cavaliers just seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
However, Culver (1-12) played much better than a team with just one win, scoring five runs on Cory Monesmith, including a three-run homer over the left-field fence in the first inning that surprised the Trojans.
In the top of the first, Culver jumped on Triton. After Dave Noel and Paul Keller walked, Morty Floherty got a ball into the wind that carried over the fence to put Culver ahead 3-0. Monesmith settled down and got the next two batters in order to end the inning.
Triton came back in the bottom of the first. Kevin Oxley got on after the Culver shortstop, Keller, threw the ball in the dirt to first base. With one on and two out, Dave Sauer blasted a 2-0 pitch to straight away center that cut the lead to one run, 3-2.
Dan Ledsome singled to open the top of the second for Culver, but Monesmith struck out two of the next three batters to leave him stranded on first.
Triton tied the score in the bottom of the second with some two-out thunder. Brad Hargrove doubled, and Scott Blackford drove him in with a base hit to make the score 3-3.
Culver added a run in the top of the third, but it could have been worse for the Trojans. Culver loaded the bases with no outs, but could only plate the single run.
Triton took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the third. Sauer doubled home Monesmith, after he walked, to tie the score again. Kyle Gould then walked. Two wild pitches and one passed ball later, and both runners scored to give the Trojans a 6-4 lead.
Triton added to the score in the bottom of the fourth, as Blackford, Monesmith and Sauer singled. Blackford scored on the Monesmith base hit, and, after Monesmith was forced out at home, Sauer stole home to take an 8-4 advantage.
Culver manufactured a run in the fifth, with a walk, a wild pitch, a balk and a sacrifice to cut into the lead, but with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the lightning began to appear, and the game was called.
Sauer led Triton offensively. He went three-for-three with three runs scored and three RBIs. Sauer missed hitting for the cycle by a triple. Blackford also had three hits, scoring once and driving in one. Monesmith picked up the win, going all five innings. He struck out seven batters for the victory.
Triton (9-2, 4-1) has now won eight of its last nine game. The Trojans will head to New Prairie on Friday at 5 p.m. [[In-content Ad]]
