BOURBON - In sports, one event can often change the outlook of an entire game.
Saturday night, late in the second quarter of the Glenn's 17-0 win over Triton, one such event occurred. On 2nd-and-8, Triton quarterback Nathan Setser threw a 9-yard pass to senior tight end Andy Westafer. Westafer was drilled by a Glenn defender and did not get up. Trainers ran onto the field and several minutes later, an ambulance was brought onto the field.
Triton coach Rod Wildman said that Westafer was conscious when he was being put in the ambulance and that there was no serious injury to him.
Up to that point, the game was controlled by Glenn. After a scoreless first quarter by both teams, Glenn came out and scored two touchdowns to make the score 14-0. The first score was provided by running back Brandon Groves, who ran it in from 13 yards out. Glenn's defense then forced the Trojans to punt and, following a face mask penalty on Triton, Glenn started with the ball on Triton's 35-yard line.
Two plays later, Corey Rough rumbled in for the second score of the night. Both teams tightened up their defense in the second half.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Triton had a chance to put some points on the board. The Trojans recovered a fumble and had the ball with more than six minutes to play in the game. They marched 66 yards down the field before Jason Disher fumbled deep in Glenn territory.
Alex Strange added a 35-yard field goal to ice the victory for Glenn.
According to Wildman, the loss of Westafer in the second quarter was a major problem for the Triton offense.
"Andy isn't just a tight end, but he's also a wide receiver," he said. "So, he's a weapon we really missed."
Triton (2-3, 1-2) travels to New Prairie on Friday. [[In-content Ad]]
