SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊIf Whitko coach Mike Sands could have eliminated the first quarter and the third quarter of Tuesday night's game against Triton, he would have.

And if Triton coach Mark Heeter could have eliminated the second and fourth quarters he would have.

"We played two very good quarters, and we played two very poor quarters," said Heeter. "Fortunately those two good quarters were good enough to get us through."

Those two strong quarters led Triton to a 48-38 win over the Wildcats.

The Trojans dominated the first quarter over the Wildcats. Amber Feldman netted the first two Triton baskets to start the game.

Whitko's lone basket in the period came at the 5:09 mark when Dana Sellers netted a jumper to make the score 7-2.

Triton went on to outscore Whitko 10-0 through the rest of the quarter and take a 17-2 lead into the second frame.

"We didn't react at the start of the game," said Sands. "The biggest thing was that we lost our defense. We started the season playing strong defense, and now our defense has fallen off."

However, then the tables turned in Whitko's favor.

Whitko opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run as Angela Trump, Sellers, and Wendel each netted baskets.

Amber Feldman stopped Triton's scoreless streak by hitting a three-pointer at the 3:27 mark.

Through the rest of the quarter, Whitko outscored Triton 6-1, cutting the Trojan lead to six, 21-15.

The Triton squad got back on track in the third quarter.

Ashli Senff and Gina Westafer put on a show in the early part of the third. They combined to score 14 unanswered points and build a 35-15 Trojan lead with 3:18 left in the frame.

Then it was time for Whitko to make a run.

Teri Walter netted a three-pointer to spark the Wildcats and start an 8-0 run. By the end of the third, Whitko was back within 13, 39-26.

In the fourth, Whitko held Triton to just nine points, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome the deficit built through the earlier quarters of the game.

Triton had a trio of scorers in double figures. Senff and Amber Feldman netted 16 points for the Trojans, while Westafer added 10.

Walter led the Wildcats with 16 points, including a 4-of-8 performance from behind the three-point arc.

"Teri started to put up some nice threes there, especially near the end," said Sands. "We should have just told her to get in there and drain the threes tonight. She was on fire."

The win moves Triton's record to 9-3, while Whitko falls to 4-8 overall.

"Whitko is not a terrible team," said Heeter. "I'm sure their record is not as good as they would like it to be, but their kids execute well and they play hard."
