BOURBON -Ê"I told my offensive coordinator, 'The last team with the ball is going to win this game,'" said Triton head coach Rodney Younis.

Younis was right. Southwood had the ball last, and the reigning state champion Knights picked up a 32-29 win over the Trojans in the Class A, Sectional 34 semifinal game Friday night in Bourbon.

After seeing Triton take a 21-20 lead into the break at halftime, Southwood coach Terry Siddall knew what his team needed to do.

"We made some defensive adjustments," said Siddall. "We tried to match up to their formations. They threw some schemes at us that we hadn't seen before. Our defense really stepped up in the second half."

The play that turned the tide for Southwood turned out to be a key interception in the third quarter.

Southwood was up 26-21 in the third quarter when quarterback Jarrod McKee threw a pass that was intercepted by Triton's Ben Bell.

Momentum seemed to shift Triton's way until McKee made up for throwing the interception by catching one of his own on Triton's first play of the drive. McKee snatched a pass from Todd Blackford from the air at the Trojan 20-yard line and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 32-21 with 3:00 showing on the third-quarter clock.

"That was a big play for us," said Siddall. "Huge play."

"That was one heck of a play," said Younis. "I told Todd, there's nothing you can do about that. We should have audibled out of that, but these are high school kids and they just didn't think of it at the time."

Triton got right back in the thick of things in the fourth quarter. With 5:30 showing on the game clock, the Trojans got the ball on their own 17-yard line. After two incomplete passes, quarterback Blackford took it up on himself to move the ball, and ran for 11 yards for a first down.

On the ensuing play, Blackford connected with Cory McClarnon for a 72-yard touchdown pass that put the Triton squad back in the game with 4:49 left in the fourth frame. Once Blackford connected with Brandon Garey for the conversion pass, Southwood's lead was cut to three, 32-29.

The Knights got the ball back on their own 32-yard line, then ran the ball and converted for two first downs, running the final minutes of the game off the clock.

When all was said and done, McKee had a hand in each Southwood score, running for three, returning the interception for one and passing for the other in the win. He finished the game with 154 passing yeards and 30 rushing yards in the game.

Blackford led the Trojan offense, passing for 151 yards and rushing for 11. He ran for two touchdowns and threw one pass for another score. He also passed for two conversions in the game.

"(Blackford) is pretty solid," said Siddall. "We flushed him out, but we couldn't stop him. They really played their butts off."

Triton receiver Cory McClarnon caught three passes for 101 yards, including two touchdowns.

"These guys left it all out there," said Younis. "They did not quit. I though this was how the game was going to be, and I thought we played very well. I thought it would come down to which defense stepped it up, and Southwood did that."

The Trojans finish the season with a 4-7 record. Southwood improves to 5-6 overall and moves on to face 9-2 Adams Central Friday.
