BOURBON – With the new school year quickly approaching, Triton School Board met Monday to discuss multiple topics with a common theme – focus.
Triton Elementary School Principal Jeremy Riffle discussed some revisions to the student handbook at the elementary level. Parents and guardians will be able to access the new handbook at school registration, and it can also be found online. With these two options available, this has cut some costs. For the high school level, the revised student handbook will be available to print at the request of parents and guardians.
Triton School Corp. Superintendent Donna Burroughs said the textbook rental fee for the school district has decreased.
“Our textbook rates in the elementary are lower than they have been since 2010,” Burroughs said.
Triton School Corp. is also striving to implement positive behavior intervention plans. Riffle said this year they are introducing some new ideas.
“We need to connect more with the kids that are doing the right thing,” Riffle said. “A lot of it goes back to building relationships with our kids.”
Riffle is focusing the elementary interventions around their PRIDE (Personal, Responsibility, Integrity, Determination and Enthusiasm) model. Riffle said the school must be more specific and explicitly instruct the behavior expectations.
Triton High School teacher Ronald Brown said the high school will be using rewards to maintain positive behavior.  He said they are focusing on all of the students and selecting one major problem area at a time. The first area they are going to work to improve is tardies because he said these lead to even more significant issues.
Students who arrive on time will fill out a piece of paper and place it in a container for the chance to be drawn at random for a reward.
“We want to pay attention to those kids that are doing good and positive things,” Brown said. “We are effectively teaching them that if you do what you’re supposed to, you will be rewarded.”
Brown is hopeful for this system. There will also be quarterly raffles so students who struggled earlier will have a chance to improve.
“I think it’s going to be positive,” Brown said. “I’m really excited to see what is going to happen.”
Burroughs then shifted the focus to continuous improvement at the high school. She mentioned the new classes to be added to the curriculum, including human body systems, robotics and statistics. She also said they are going to start vocational training.
“If (the students) are not going to college, that doesn’t mean we don’t care about preparing them for the future,” Burroughs said.
School registration will begin online July 29 and continue at the schools the 30 and 31. The first day of school is Aug. 13.[[In-content Ad]]
