BOURBON - The Triton Trojans scored 20 unanswered points to hold off visiting Northfield Friday night. The final score was 20-12, taking their season record to 2-0.

On the second play of the game, sophomore Chad Ulmer sprinted for a 70-yard touchdown run. However, the officials ruled that he stepped out of bounds at the 29-yard line. Triton had to punt when they couldn't capitalize on their first opportunity.

Starting on its own 20-yard line, Northfield drove the length of the field in 1:58, capped by a two-yard run. The score remained 6-0 after the extra-point attempt was no good.

The Norseman then surprised Triton with an onside kick which, Northfield recovered at the 47.

Triton's defense was kept on the field for more than four minutes as the Norseman scored again to go up 12-0. The two point conversion was stopped short by Triton, giving the Trojans the jump-start they needed.

"I told our guys that Northfield was going to run the ball down our throats. We seem to start games very slow and then we come out of the gate," said Triton coach Rodney Younis.

Sophomore Troy McIntyre led the Trojans to their first score by throwing an 11-yard pass to keep the drive alive. Ulmer then scampered for seven yards to score the first Trojan touchdown. The two-point run attempt by Ulmer was stopped short.

Ulmer carried the ball 16 times for 146 yards to lead all rushers.

"We are a young football team and we are going to get better as we go along. We are not going to use inexperience as an excuse," said. Younis.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Norsemen fumbled the ball on their first play, which was recovered by junior Lee Bragg at Northfield's 27-yard line.

McIntyre then threw a touchdown pass to senior Anthony Faucett to tie the score at 12. The two-point conversion was stopped.

Mcintyre threw two touchdown passes on 9-of-19 passing with one interception.

After a defensive stop, the Trojans received the ball with 4:33 left in the second quarter.

With the aid of a pass interference penalty, Triton marched down the field to take the lead for good. Junior Trent Furnivall caught a short pass from Mcintyre while twisting and running through players scoring from nine yards out. Jacob Everett then made a leaping catch in the corner of the endzone to add the two-point conversion.

The coversion catch by Everett proved to be the last scoring of the game.

The Triton defense bent a little, but never seemed to break. Coach Younis agreed.

"Our defense did a great job tonight. They stepped up when they needed to," said Younis.

The Trojans forced three fumbles and blocked one punt in the second half, allowing them to sustain some drives that ended in disappointment.

"We started some good drives in the second half. We just couldn't seem to captilize," said Younis.

Northfield got the ball back with 58 seconds left in the game, but the Trojan defense denied a last-ditch effort from the Norseman.

"I give a lot of credit to my offensive line, including my tight end. They stepped up when we needed them. They helped to maintain some drives tonight," said Younis.

For the game, Northfield rushed the ball 43 times for 280 yards, while the Trojans tallied 193 yards on 35 carries.

Triton racked up 126 yards through the air, while Northfield had just 26 passing yards.

Triton had 14 first downs in the game, while the Norsemen picked up 12 first downs.

Triton fumbled three times, with the Norsemen recovering two of them. Northfield fumbled four times, with all four of them being scooped up by the host Trojans.

The Trojans are in action again Friday when they travel to Culver and open Northern State Conference action with the Cavaliers.

A win Friday night over the Cavaliers would improve Triton to 3-0 for the first time in years.

The best Triton has started the season under Younis has been 2-0.
