Triton Blessed With Experience

Lady Trojans hope tough schedule translates into postseason success

BOURBON – Not many basketball teams across Indiana will return as many upperclassmen as Triton’s 2014-15 girls.
Among nine players on Triton’s varsity roster, seven are juniors or seniors.
“Our five seniors, Kylie Mason, Krystal Sellers, Becca Kennedy, Hannah Jennings, and Lauren Hostrawser, all  saw a lot of varsity action last year,” said Triton head coach Adam Heckaman. “Along with our seniors, we have two juniors, Jaela Meister and Shayla May. Jaela played a lot of minutes in the varsity games last year and Shayla will be moving up from the junior varsity.
“Rounding out our line up we expect to get some key contributions from freshman Hannah Wanemacher and Nichole Sechrist.”
Over the last three seasons the Lady Trojans are 48-19 and own a pair of Northern State Conference Championships. But the team hasn’t attained the level of success it seeks.
“We’ve seen a lot of success the last several years in terms of wins at Triton. It’s not translated into the postseason success we would like to see,” said Heckaman. “We play in the toughest sectional in 1A and have built our regular season schedule up to try to prepare us for the sectional this year.
“Our goal as a team is to compete at a high level every night in games and in practice and to get better each time we take the floor. We know that if we can do that each night we will be setting ourselves up to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season when it counts the most.”
With the schedule upgrade comes additional mental and physical stress.
“We play a difficult schedule and when you have to compete at a high level each night and every game is close, sometimes it’ll get difficult. We’ll need our seniors to step up and lead when we go through those difficult stretches,” Heckaman said.
“We have a lot of length this year on our team and that is something we’ll try to use to our advantage. We want to run some different defenses and we are still working hard at fine tuning those.”
With so much going for the Lady Trojans this year, along with the challenges set before the team, Heckaman has an idea what this year’s senior laden team should be remembered for.
“If we could be known for anything at the end of the year I hope that other teams will look at us and see how hard the girls work both on and off the floor. There are only certain things you can control in the game of basketball and one of those things is how hard you work.
“I would just hope at the end of the year that other teams would say the Triton Trojans are one of those teams that plays hard and is always going to give it their all.”[[In-content Ad]]
