BOURBON - Some timely three-point shooting helped push the Triton Lady Trojans to a 42-29 win over the visiting South Central (Union Mills) Lady Satellites in girls basketball action Friday.

Thanks to back-to-back treys by senior Savannah Stutzman, Triton (2-3) got out to a quick 6-2 lead, and 15 of the Trojans' first 18 points came from behind the three-point arc.[[In-content Ad]]"The girls did a good job of just waiting for what was there instead of trying to force things," second-year Triton coach Adam Heckaman said. "We worked for the best shot each time and we hit them. We shot well from the field and brought (South Central) out of their zone."

South Central (0-3) was forced out of their 3-2 zone thanks to Triton's 46-percent three-point shooting in their first half, leading to a 23-16 lead at the break.

"That's the first time we've started the game well this year," Heckaman said. "That makes a big deal in confidence."

A real boost to the Lady Trojans' confidence came after South Central crept to within 17-14 with 3:05 to play in the first half when junior Aubrey Boardman hit back-to-back threes, giving her team some breathing room at 23-14 on her way to a team-high 10 points.

"Shots like that are big," Heckaman said. "She steps up and hits them a lot. She had 18 for us against Argos, hitting a lot of shots in that game. It kind of gets us going."

Along with her 10 points, Boardman also led Triton with three assists, but she wasn't the only one scoring, as sophomore Megan Howdeshell had nine, Stutzman finished with eight and junior Allison Thacker netted seven.

"We have different people that can score on different nights," Heckaman said. "They're starting to understand that. They're relying on each other not worrying about doing everything themselves."

Senior Brittany Wallace only finished the game with a point, but did finish with a game-high nine rebounds and senior Amanda Miller had three steals to go with four points.

The team's diversity was on display in the second half when four different girls chipped in on a 14-2 run between the 2:20 mark in the third quarter and 5:49 mark in the fourth, extending a 25-20 lead into a commanding 39-22 advantage.

That kind of balance may be good for the team, but it's made Heckaman's job of finding a starting lineup a bit tough.

"I didn't even know who I was going to start until just before the game," Heckaman said. "I was just going to see how warm-ups were going and get a feel for how things were going. That was our fifth game in eight days and that was our fifth starting lineup."

He'll have another opportunity for another starting lineup when Triton hosts the Culver Girls Academy Monday at 6 p.m.
