BOURBON - Triton School Corp. adopted the 2008 budget, capital projects fund for 2008-10 and bus replacement plan for 2008-17 at the board meeting Monday night.

Superintendent Ted Chittum reported the number of students this year is up 21 from last year. Total student population now is at 1,070.

The board agreed to meet in executive session Oct. 8 to discuss teacher contract negotiations.

High school principal Mike Chobonov presented the Trojan Spotlight. Chobonov reported a synopsis of the Professional Learning Community workshop that he and 12 other staff members attended. The premise of the workshop is teaching versus learning.

Ruthie Mc McCullough, life skills instructor, said the workshop focused on educators working together to benefit each individual student, rather than working in isolation.

Diane Westphal, art teacher, said the deeper communication between teachers would increase the expectations and accountability of the student to be brought to a higher level. Westphal agreed it would help students as a whole if the staff communicates better.

Westphal said, "I will know if a student is having problems in science, and I can help them come up with ways to increase their learning in each subject, and visa-versa. It is about staff working together for the students."

Dawn Slein, science teacher, said the greatest thing she took away from the workshop is, "It is not how well I teach the lesson, rather it is how well did each student learned the lesson."

All who attended talked of the positive impact that this will bring to Triton to make it a better school for all who attend.

The board accepted the retirements of George White, Lynn Gross and Bill Moriarty. The board thanked them for their years of service and wished them well in their endeavors.

The board also approved the recommendations of David Dady as full-time bus driver, and James Shively from fifth-grade boys basketball to sixth-grade boys basketball.

Rebecca Dennis, elementary school principal, reported step testing is complete and they are looking forward to the results. She also reported there are 18-20 students participating in the extended day program.

"This will give the students that extra bump of time to focus on learning," she said. Dennis said she is excited about the progress the students are making.

Past board member Larry Lemler reminded the board that the debt service fund will be retiring, and this would be a great opportunity for the board to look at some of the mechanical issues that the school will be faced with.

It is homecoming week for Triton. The Community Pep Session will be Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The homecoming game is Friday night.
