Traffic Concerns Delay Church's Plat Approval

A new church and school on the south side of CR 350N and one-fourth mile west of CR 100E in Plain Township will have to wait at least a month longer for plat approval.

The petition for a preliminary plat approval for a residential district on 21.94 acres of land was continued by the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission.

The issue of heavy local traffic to the area prevented initial approval for recommendation from the commission. Highway engineer and Superintendent Robert Ladson voiced the initial concern to the commission.

"The concern really comes when you put a church and school here," Ladson said.

The road, Ladson said, is not only heavily traveled, but narrow. He said that traffic from homes, the church and school would need to be better routed.

The representative for petitioner Betty Berkey agreed to meet with Area Plan Director Dan Richard and Ladson between now and the next meeting to work on the road and driveway situation.

In three other cases, denial for recommendation was given for the same reason in each case.

The petitioners' requests were to rezone from an agricultural district to an agricultural II district. Each petition was denied because a rezoning of the land was ruled incompatible with the area.

An agricultural district is primarily for agricultural land use. One residence is permitted on each piece of land. The agricultural II district is plotted for an agricultural subdivision. Each lot must be on at least one acre. Mini-farming is allowed on the land also.

The plan commission clarified their actions to the petitioners that the denials were a recommendation only. The petitioners could seek approval for rezoning from the county commissioners at the Sept. 15 meeting at 10 a.m.

The requested areas for rezoning from agricultural district to agricultural II district included:

• Property on the east side of CR 600S, east of CR 300S in Seward Township.

• Property on the west side of Magee Road and 1,360 feet east of County Farm Road in Clay Township.

• Property on the south side of Crystal Lake Road, 1,650 feet west of CR 650W in Harrison Township.

Wednesday's total business included five recommendations for approval, three recommendations for denial and issuance of two continuances.

The next area plan commission meeting is scheduled for Oct. 7. [[In-content Ad]]
