The 2011 Tracey Yeager Memorial 5K, organized by Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy student Nate Stone, raised $22,000 for the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund. Yeager, a Navy helicopter pilot, died the year before on Memorial Day after a five-year battle with cancer.
The run May 27 will benefit the walking and bicycle trails under development in Kosciusko County through the Tracey’s Trails Fund at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation.
It starts at 9 a.m. in Winona Lake Park. Early registration is $15 and ends Friday. For information, visit facebook.com/TYM5K
Care for cancer patients was a natural fit for the first year of the memorial, said Steve Yeager, Tracey’s husband for 15 years. But in deciding to bring it back, he said he wanted to benefit something that was more personal for her.
“She had cancer, but that wasn’t her life,” he remarked. “I thought we should contribute to a cause that’s something Tracey would be about ... The trail system is a great thing to have in the community and I think it’s a good way to honor her legacy.”
Since SYM Financial Advisors is underwriting the cost of the memorial, 100 percent of money raised will go toward Tracey’s Trails. Steve Yeager said he’s working with the Ride+Walk Advisory Committee to determine how the funds will be used, but hopes they can identify a stretch of trail to name after Tracey.
The Ride+Walk committee will use memorial funds for the local funding portion for matching money for either the Center Lake trail or the side path on CR 300N by Madison School, according to Elle Turley, an executive assistant with SYM.
“Admiral” sponsors for the memorial are Nelson Beverage, Pay Pro Media, Wildman Business Group, Depuy Synthes and SYM Financial Advisors. Other sponsors include K21 Health Foundation, Martin’s Supermarket #26, Flexaust, Silveus Insurance, Times-Union, Symmetry Medical, Kosciusko Runners Association, WRSW and Coldwell Banker – Brian Peterson Group.[[In-content Ad]]
