Torpy, who currently is the chief deputy, was elected to fill the clerk seat during a caucus Tuesday night at the Kosciusko County Courthouse.
Torpy defeated Christopher Sanders.
Torpy, whose duties begin today, fills the vacancy left by McSherry, who resigned effective March 8 to accept a job at Lake City Bank.
McSherry was first elected to the clerk position in 2008, and was re-elected in November. He had approximately three years and nine months left in his second term.
The clerk position has a two-term limit.
Torpy was elected by 49 precinct committeemen including three vice precinct committeemen,
Each candidate had 3 minutes to discuss why they were seeking the seat.
Torpy said she had plans to run for the seat at the end of McSherry’s term, but when the opportunity came earlier it was time to step up and fill the position.
Torpy said she has enjoyed being a part of the clerk’s office and started there at age 18.
“The clerk’s office is my home away from home,” Torpy said.
She said she has been a part of the election office for 17 years.
“I have worked hard for the election process and put 100 percent of myself into the election each year,” Torpy said.
She has assisted voters, candidates, precinct committeemen, poll workers and media with questions they have had.
In 2005, Kosciusko County was selected by the Indiana Secretary of State’s office to be a pilot county for the Indiana Statewide Voter Registration System.
Sharon Christner, former clerk, and Torpy worked alongside the Secretary of State’s Office, Quest Systems and other pilot counties by making suggestions to Quest for system improvements.
In 2010, the county purchased a new court management system. Torpy worked along with the clerk, clerk’s staff, and court staff to get the system up and running.
