He was born Aug. 7, 1939, in Frankfort, to Roy D. and Betty Douglas Brovont. On Jan. 14, 1961, in Muncie, he married Martha Jean Dugdale, who died March 6, 1987. On Oct. 19, 2002, he married Rebecca Moss, who survives.
He graduated from Sweetser High School in 1957 and from Ball State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology and a master’s degree in education.
After moving to Rochester, he began his 26-year teaching and coaching career in fall 1963 at Richland Center High School, where he taught industrial arts and physical education and coached boys basketball and track. He joined Rochester Community Schools in 1965, when the two school systems consolidated.
At Rochester Schools he taught industrial arts and was a track coach, assistant football coach and freshman, junior varsity and varsity basketball coach. Early in his career, his building trades class constructed the original administration building, and then in 2011, he was a participating contractor when it was remodeled. He was the Rochester Middle School athletic director when he retired in 1989.
In 1973, he joined with Marvin Overmyer to form Brovont & Overmyer Construction. In spring 1974, the company repaired many of the tornado-ravaged homes in the Rochester area.
In 1995, he started Tom Brovont & Son Builders and Developers and proceeded to build numerous custom homes in the local five-county area.
He was the driving force in many housing developments.
He was an active member of the Kosciusko/Fulton County Builders Association. He served as president and was an active member of the board of directors. Between 1991 and 2005 he built custom homes for the annual Homes on Parade event.
He was a charter member of the Rochester Optimist Club and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Indiana Homebuilders Association. He served on the Fulton County Public Library Board of Directors from 1986 to 2001 and the Fulton County Council from 1995-99.
Also surviving are his mother, Betty Brovont, Rochester; two sons Jeffrey Roy Brovont, Lafayette, and Douglas J. Brovont, Rochester; stepchildren: Sarah Fischer, Denver, Colo.; Gretchen (and spouse Jason) Speidel, Brooklyn, Mich.; Adam Fischer, Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren: Martha Briann, Greg Ryne, Madalyn Nicole Lewis, all of Rochester; three step-granddaughters; two sisters, Jennifer (and spouse Larry) Brinker, Ramona, Calif., and Jill (and spouse Phil) Kimbrough, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.; and former son-in-law, Bryan Lewis, Rochester. He also was preceded in death by his father, who died Jan. 29, 1995; and daughter, Julia “Kim” Lewis, who died Nov. 7, 2003.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Linda Sue Hewitt officiating. A private burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
