By TERESA SMITH, Times-Union Staff Writer-

Tire recycling will be available to Kosciusko County residents beginning April 17, and then every third Saturday of each month at the KC Depot, due to a program sponsored by the county's Solid Waste Management District.

The district board Tuesday heard the bid submitted by Elk Distributing for tire recycling was acceptable after a financial statement was received and references were checked.

The program will be available through October.

Boxes to collect unused cellular phones have been placed in all police departments and libraries in the county. The box placed in Warsaw Community Public Library will be there for only 30 days.

SWMD Executive Director Sue Studebaker said she would like to develop a conference for students and another for adults to educate the public about local environmental issues.

She said she could have an agenda and a list of possible sponsors of the program by August.

Board member Avis Gunter suggested Studebaker link up with another program, like Taste of Ag, to present information to students. Studebaker said the district has a booth with activities from 5 to 7 p.m.

Studebaker said AmeriWaste has been asked to sponsor registration and room fees for herself and educator Bendy Mann to attend the Indiana Recycling Conference May 10-12.

The board also:

• Approved a tire recycling fee increase from $1 to $1.25 for car tires, and to $10 for large truck and tractor tires.

The district should realize $250 for each trailer load of tires with the increase.

• Heard an appliance recycling day has been set for May 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the depot. Costs are $20 for appliances with freon in them and $10 for other appliances, including those that had freon and are now tagged freon-free.

The local arena football league has volunteered to help on appliance recycling day.

The district will receive 20 percent of the steel sales from the project, handled by New Genesis, Indianapolis.

• Heard someone stole 15 to 20 bags of aluminum cans from the recycling station area, a value of about $150. The incident was reported to police.

• Heard people are dropping off glass, though that service has ended. A couple of days ago someone left five large boxes of glass at a recycling station.

• Heard from attorney Mike Miner that a new host agreement should be available next month.

• Heard steel barrels or plastic barrels are needed for the household hazardous waste program. The containers must have lids that will reseal.

Board members are Brad Jackson, John Kinsey, Avis Gunter, George Clemens, David Delp, Ron Truex and Ernie Wiggins. Clemens, Delp and Jackson were absent. [[In-content Ad]]
