BURKET - Construction is winding down at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

The building project at Tippecanoe Valley High School that began in 2004 is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 31.

The builders are putting the finishing touches on paint throughout the addition, finishing lights and curtains in the stage area, and completing three final rooms in the rebuilding project. Concrete work on the front of the building will be finished in the spring when the weather is more conducive to concrete work.

Lights, however, continue to cause concerns for members of the school board. The light fixtures in some classrooms cause scalloped shadows in parts of the rooms, including the perimeter and on some white boards. The contractor says the scalloped shadows are a characteristic of the fixtures chosen.

After some discussion, the board decided to ask the teachers their opinions on the lights and promised to get in touch with the construction company with a lighting decision near the end of the week.

In other business, the board:

• Heard a presentation from Lora Harp and Angie Miller about the school corporation's ISTEP scores. Overall, Valley's scores were comparable to state averages in most categories in both math and language arts.

• Recognized student achievements at Burket Educational Center.

• Heard one third-grade student at Mentone Elementary School earned a 620, the highest possible score, on the math portion of the ISTEP test.

• Approved the hiring of Lisa Patino (instructional assistant at Mentone) and Bret Tirey (English, TVHS).

• Approved maternity leave requests for Rachel Higgins (TVHS) and Lacey Jones (Mentone).

• Approved Adult Basic Education contracts for Rickey Phillips and Eula Smith.

• Approved a senior trip to Washington, D.C., for Deb Day, Kristine Fetterhoff, Jeff Shriver and Scott Smith.

• Gave permission for Assistant Superintendent Brett Boggs to advertise bid specifications and open bidding for three new school buses. Bids will be accepted at the superintendent's office beginning Feb. 17 at 10:30 a.m.

• Approved claims and payrolls from December and early January.

• Reorganized the board of finance as is done each January. The board of finance president is David O'Brien, and the secretary is Rod Eaton.

• Approved a resolution to transfer appropriations.

• Heard the financial report. The total of all balances in the school corporation was $7,534,359.

• Approved minutes from the Nov. 29 special session and Dec. 12 regular meeting and executive session.

Tippecanoe Valley School Board members are: David O'Brien, president; Rod Eaton, Bryan Murphy, Hal Hoffman and Mark Wise. Superintendent is Dr. Daniel V. Kramer. [[In-content Ad]]
