Tippecanoe Valley In First Year Of Academic Probation
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
Schools are placed into one of five categories based on three factors: student pass rates on the ISTEP+ tests and End-of-Course Assessments, improvement on these passing rates and federal Adequate Yearly Progress determinations.
Tippecanoe Valley High School was placed in the first year Academic Probation category.
State law requires school corporations with schools placed in the first year of Academic Probation to meet certain obligations outlined in Indiana Code 20-31-9. The school board is required to issue a public notice of the school's lack of improvement. The school board must also hold a public hearing in which public testimony is received concerning the lack of improvement. Broad community participation is expected.
Finally, the committee that develops Tippecanoe Valley High School's Strategic and Continuous School Improvement and Achievement Plan shall revise the plan to address the lack of improvement. Revisions may include, but are not limited to, shifting resources, changing personnel, and requesting the state board appoint an outside team to manage the school or assist in the development of a new plan.
Seventy-five percent of Indiana's high schools placed in the two lowest categories - Academic Watch or Academic Probation.
The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation will conduct the public hearing during its March meeting of the Board of School Trustees March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
The public hearing is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the implications of probation and the process in the years to come if the school's performance does not improve.
TVHS Principal Kirk Doehrmann will discuss the factors that resulted in the placement of Tippecanoe Valley High School on Academic Probation. He will also discuss the changes already in place as well as those planned to correct the lack of improvement. Time will be provided for public testimony, including an opportunity for questions and comments.[[In-content Ad]]
