NAPPANEE — In Class 3A Sectional 21 action at NorthWood High School Wednesday, the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team kept its season going with an eight-point win over Fairfield.
Valley (13-6) exchanged blows with Fairfield (15-7), before converting 8 of 10 free throws in the final quarter, while Fairfield was 1 of 8, leading to a 55-47 victory for the Lady Vikings.
“There’s been times when we’ve lost basketball games because we didn’t make the big free throws when we needed to,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said.
The Lady Vikings did make their free throws and now prepare to face the NorthWood Lady Panthers (17-5) in Friday night’s semifinals, as the host team had a battle early against the Wawasee Lady Warriors (2-17), but eventually rolled to 68-38 victory.
Valley and NorthWood will face off following the 6 p.m. semifinal game between Whitko and Lakeland.
Entering the sectional with hopes of their first crown since 2007, the Lady Vikings drew 15-win Fairfield in their opening game.
Both teams came out rocky, as Valley committed five first-quarter turnovers and Fairfield had eight, but both squads gradually came around.
In a game matching teams with a similar talent level, it was Valley freshman Meredith Brouyette who provided a big boost off the bench.
Entering the game in the second quarter, Brouyette made her first four shots and scored 10 of her team’s 12 second-quarter points, helping the Lady Vikings hold a slim 22-20 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Fairfield came out on a 7-2 run and took a 27-24 lead on a trey by senior Jenna Kieper.
Valley freshman Anne Secrest cut the deficit to one with a bucket, and following a turnover Brouyette connected on a 3, giving her team a 29-27 lead with 3:16 left in the third.
Fairfield again took the lead at 40-38 after sophomore Alexis Zook hit a three-pointer with 4:24 remaining in the game, but Brouyette answered right back with a triple of her own 16 seconds later, giving her a game-high 16 points.
“A couple times, they’d hit a 3 and she’d come right back down and hit one,” Kindig said.
Following another basket by Secrest, Fairfield sophomore Alyssa Zook tied the game at 43-43 on a three-pointer with 3:14 remaining, but then Valley senior Cara Hoffman took over.
Scoring on back-to-back possessions, Hoffman built the Valley lead to 47-43 with 2:30 to play, and from there, the Lady Vikings went 8 of 9 at the charity stripe, sealing the game.
Hoffman netted 10 of her 15 points in the final quarter.
“She played like a senior in that fourth quarter,” Kindig said of the 5-foot-5 guard. “She had 10 big points and hit some free throws.”
Junior Caylie Teel and Secrest joined Hoffman and Brouyette in double-digit scoring, recording 12 and 10 points, respectively.
“When we have four girls in double figures, we’re pretty tough to beat,” Kindig said.
Along with her point total, the active Teel also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
“I can’t say enough about Caylie Teel,” Kindig said. “I thought she played really well tonight.”
Secrest also had a solid game, posting a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the competition level will increase Friday night.
Against NorthWood, the 6-foot Secrest will  be matched up with 6-foot Youngstown State commit Morgan Olson, who is the Lady Panthers’ all-time leader in points and rebounds.
During the regular season, Valley fell 52-38 in Nappanee on Jan. 14, with Secrest holding her own with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
“They have a couple players we’re going to have to contain, but right now, we’re going to go back and look at film to see what we can do,” Kindig said.
