MENTONE - Preliminary enrollment figures were released Monday at the Tippecanoe Valley school board meeting.
The figures show a decrease of 28 students for the 1998-99 school year.
Akron had a 33-student decrease, Burket showed a decrease of six students and the middle school had a decrease of 27 students.
The only increases were at Mentone, up 32 students, and the high school, with an increase of 13. The total enrollment was 2,242 students.
The board formally adopted the 1999 budget, including the capital projects plan and the transportation plan.
Board member Mark Wise questioned the legality of the certification issues at an Aug. 24 executive session. Wise said the meeting did not include interviewing prospective employees but instead dealt with a current independent contractor. Wise said that he could not support the issue as it was stated in the minutes. The motion to delete from the minutes was defeated 3 to 2 with Wise and Rod Eaton voting for the motion to delete.
Tom Shively was approved by the board as the new transportation director at a salary of $35,000. A motion to hire him at a salary of $32,000 with a three-month review was defeated by a vote of 3 to 2 with Bruce Andrews, Fred McSherry and Tom Weaver voting against the motion.
Other staff members approved were David Scott Smith, Diane Shambaugh, Brenda Engle, Lori Miller, Penny Shewman, Jane Stavedahl and Jill Jenkins.
Lyle Butt's salary of $31,000 was also approved.
Extracurricular appointments were approved for Chris Rhodes, Anina Bowman, Janelle Riner, Kerri Thacker and Kaylyn Bussard.
The board also approved the renewal of Cindy Gudeman to the Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority.
The student representatives to the school board were introduced for the 1998-99 school year. Jenny Sanders will serve her second year with Sarah McSherry serving as the junior representative.
The board also approved this year's senior trip to Washington, D.C., and recognized Burket school for being selected to participate in "History Alive" sponsored by the Indiana Humanities Council and the Dekko Foundation. [[In-content Ad]]
