DeHart, Frieden Take Reins Of Local Golf Teams
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
For phys ed teacher Jennifer Frieden, Whitko High School has been good.
"I'm going into my fifth year at Whitko," said the 1988 Manchester High School graduate. "Roger Carr and I met in my second year, it's been an experience. Whitko has been good, I found my husband and got a coaching job."
Frieden, a 1993 graduate of Ball State University, will marry Carr, a Whitko High School Agriculture teacher, in November. To go along with that, she was recently named head girls golf coach.
"Mr. (John) Mohr (Whitko Athletic Director) told me about the opening towards the end of last season," said Frieden. "Mike Cox (last year's Whitko coach) moved to Anderson and I applied. Two weeks later Mohr told me I had the job. I was hired before school was out."
Frieden, who has never coached golf before at any level, will experience her first match today when her Wildcats travel to Concord face the Minutemen and Wawasee.
"We've only had two practices and bam, all of the sudden we have a match," said Friedan. "To have to go and compete already the girls are scared. I told them to relax and have fun. Don't be so nervous and have fun."
Frieden's varsity lineup today will include freshmen Miranda Krider and Beth Truman, junior Jodi Walters and seniors Cara Badskey and Carla Herbst.
Frieden said her goals for her first year were simple, yet important.
"We want to look at individual scores and watch them come down, in some cases a lot," said Frieden. "We have to get the kids more involved with golf in the summer."
Frieden said 10 girls came out for the team this year, which is a better turnout than in recent years.
Frieden is not the only phys ed teacher to take a head coaching position at a local high school this summer. Scott DeHart has replaced Tom Littlefield as coach at Wawasee.
"I enjoy golf and it's a new opportunity to stay involved in athletics," said DeHart. "It's something I've talked about before. It's a new challenge, that's the biggest thing."
DeHart is no stranger to Wawasee athletics. For seven years DeHart was the head wrestling coach before he gave it up to spend time with his family. But now he says he's ready to get involved again and golf was the perfect fit.
"The nice thing is I wasn't forced (to stop coaching)," said DeHart. "I wanted to spend time with my kids and I really enjoyed spending time with my kids. The thing with golf is that it's not so demanding. With wrestling I was involved 11-1/2 months of the year. In golf we'll start at 8 a.m. and be done by 12:30 p.m."
Under Littlefield, the Warriors were 7-16 last year and 1-5 in the Northern Lakes Conference. DeHart, a Mishawaka Marian High and St. Joseph's College graduate, knows the NLC won't be anything of a cakewalk.
"Our conference is very solid," said DeHart. "It's one of the top conferences in the state, just playing in our conference is an advantage down the road. We're going to start five kids who have not played varsity."
DeHart listed a few of his starters as junior Ashley Ward and sophomores Aimee Niles and Ashley Bell. He said two freshmen would be major contributors.
The only other local team in action today is Warsaw, who will host East Noble at 10 a.m. at Rozella Ford. Manchester and NorthWood both open up their season at home Wednesday and Tippecanoe Valley travels to Concord Thursday.
