ELKHART -ÊThe Warsaw boys track team continued its dominance of the Northern Lakes Conference Thursday night at the conference championship meet, defeating its closest competitor by 37 points.

The Tigers placed first in the round-robin competition by going undefeated (6-0) in regular season matchups and secured an outright NLC title with Thursday's victory. The Tigers won their third straight NLC title with some changes in the regular lineup.

"We switched some people up tonight," said Warsaw coach Troy Akers. "Greg Seiss normally runs in the 800, and we moved him around a bit tonight. We didn't have our usual lineup out there."

Although Seiss did not compete in the 800 run, Rob Peters stepped up for the Tigers and placed first in the competition with a time of 2:01.11.

"Rob Peters really stepped up for us in the 800," said Akers. "He ran a super race."

While the Tigers won the meet handily, the Warsaw squad did not perform as well as usual in the running events.

"I think we could have done better on the track," said Akers, "but the field events gave us the charge we needed. The shot, disc and pole vault got us a lot of points."

Warsaw dominated the field events, with Jarod Leasure leading the way. Leasure placed first in both the shot put and the discus. His throw of 47 feet, 2-1/2 inches in the shot put topped his nearest competitor by 8-1/2 inches. In the discus, Leasure's toss of 155-8 outdistanced second-place finisher and teammate Ryan Brennan by nearly 14 feet.

"Leasure was a double winner," said Akers. "He did an excellent job. He and Ryan Brennan gave us the one-two punch we needed in the discus event and set the tone for the rest of the meet."

Zach Scheetz earned another first-place finish for the Tigers with a 14-3 performance in the pole vault. Scheetz barely missed setting a new school record with his attempt of a 14-11 vault.

"Zach did a great job as well," said Akers. "Fourteen-3 is the state cut, so if he continues to do well, he could very well advance to the state meet."

But the Tigers were not the only team with strong individual performances. NorthWood snagged three firsts, while Wawasee earned one.

Scott Hill of NorthWood won the 100 race with a time of 11.57, just three tenths of a second ahead of Concord's Donald Jackson. Aaron Hoover won the 3200 race in 9:57.56, almost four seconds faster than Wawasee's Rob Chalfant.

Ian Reed captured the other NorthWood first place finish with a leap of 21-0, 10 inches farther than his nearest competitor.

"Reed is such a spark for our team," said NorthWood coach Mark BeMiller. "He had competed well all year long. He has a tremendous amount of energy.

"I think he would do well anywhere I would put him. He is a tremendous competitor. He's a lighthearted kid, but put him in a competitive situation, and he is fierce. He wants to win."

Chalfant was the lone first-place finisher. His time of 4:24.14 in the 1600 topped Goshen's Andrew McKalips by nearly two seconds. Later, Chalfant placed second in the 3200 run.

"Rob ran a gutsy race," said Wawasee coach Jim Wallace. "But I think it took a lot out of him. He usually stays up with (Aaron) Hoover (of NorthWood) in the 3200, but he was pretty tired for that race."

Warsaw and Concord led the meet finished with four first-place finishes each. NorthWood finished with three, Goshen and Plymouth ended with two and Wawasee had one.

Two of Concord's first place finishes came in the 400 relay and 1600 relay, and both relay teams set NLC records.

The next meet for all the teams at the NLC meet is the sectional next week. Warsaw, NorthWood and Wawasee will travel back to Elkhart compete in the sectional at Concord Thursday.
