Tigers Win Second Straight Sectional

SYRACUSE -ÊThe Warsaw Tigers won their first back-to-back gymnastics sectional title in school history Saturday at Wawasee High School behind a strong performance from Jillian Letsch.

Letsch, a sophomore, won her second all-around title in a row at Wawasee with a total score of 34.45. She placed first on the uneven bars and the balance beam and second in the floor exercise and vault competitions.

Callie Edgington finished close behind Letsch, placing fourth in the all-around competition with a 32.1 total score. Edgington placed third on the balance beam, fourth on the uneven bars, fifth in the vault and 11th on the floor exercise to earn her spot in the all-around competition.

The four-person Warsaw squad was rounded out by Amanda Rice and Shyloh Hoy, who placed ninth and 24th respectively in the all-around category.

"Our girls were solid on everything," said Warsaw coach Amanda Campbell. "It was close the entire way. After the beam, we had a two-point lead which was nice. Then on the floor exercise, Wawasee had a girl who injured her knee and we were able to increase our lead even more. By the time we got to the vault, we knew we just needed a solid performance to win.

"The balance beam was definitely a deciding factor. The girls did an outstanding job on the beam."

Wawasee earned second place honors in the team competition and the opportunity to compete in the regional next Saturday.

Angie Beer led the Warriors, placing second in the all-around competition. Beer placed first in the floor exercise, second on the balance beam and third on the vault and uneven bars.

The next Wawasee finisher in the all-around competition, Lisa Ummel, placed seventh after finishing fourth on the vault, sixth on the bars, 12th in the floor exercise and 18th on the balance beam.

Katie Brown and Katie Millar placed 12th and 18 respectively to round out the Wawasee squad.

After placing seventh out of 10 times, the Manchester Squires ended the 1998-99 season.

Marie Weller was the top Squire finisher in the all-around, placing 27th, while Carmen DeFusco earned a 36th-place overall finish. Brandy Briner, Megan Goshert and Shay Knecht rounded out the Manchester squad.

The top three teams advance to the regional competition at Wawasee High School Saturday while the top six individuals also advance to regional.

Warsaw, Wawasee and Plymouth will compete in Saturday's team regional while several individuals also advanced in each category.
