Tigers Win Joe Harris Shootout

Led by Will Petro’s medalist score of 74, the 14th-ranked Tigers won the 18-hole match with a four-player score of 311.
Plymouth finshed second at 314, followed by NorthWood (321), Wawasee (325), Fort Wayne Canterbury (332), Triton (341), Rochester (356), Warsaw’s JV team (364) and Wabash (400).
Warsaw’s Josh Ahlersmeyer and Triton’s Darren Harrell played as individuals, shooting 84 and 89, respectively.
Warsaw’s score was 39 strokes better than its performance Saturday in the Wawasee Invitational at South Shore, as the Tigers were missing Petro, Brandon Eckert and Ryan Cultice because of an academic competition.
With those three back in the lineup, joining Jonny Hollar and Reid Cameron, the Tigers were the class of the field Tuesday.
To go with Petro’s 74, Hollar shot 75, Cameron and Eckert carded 81s and Cultice finished with an 82.
“It was good to have those guys back,” said Warsaw assistant coach David Bailey, speaking for head coach Ben Barkey, who missed the match because he was sick. “The guys have a lot of confidence together.
“The course was tough,” added Bailey. “The greens were fast. The guys kept fighting. I’m proud of them.”
For Warsaw’s second team, Michael Jensen and Luke Rata shot 87 and 89, respectively, Jacob Foster finished with a 92 and Luke Johnson and Robbie Sullivan carded 96s.
The sectional this year will be played at Rozella Ford, rather than Stonehenge.
Of the eight schools that competed in the Joe Harris Shootout, four of them will play in the Warsaw Sectional – Plymouth, Triton, Wawasee and the Tigers.
“My kids are used to this course, they’ve seen these greens before,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter, whose team finished sixth, 30 strokes behind Warsaw. “I talk to the kids all the time about keeping the ball below the hole. We’re just inexperienced right now. My (Nos.) 4 and 5 guys have no varsity experience. The last seven or eight years, we’ve been averaging 310 or 311. I have to step back and tell myself we’re not those teams.”
In recent years, Triton and Warsaw have had epic state tournament battles. Graduation, however, has taken its toll on Carpenter’s program.
Gone from last year’s state finals team for the Trojans are standouts Quentyn Carpenter and Ryan Rapp.
Greg Music led Triton Tuesday with an 81, while Tanner Shepherd and Lucas Shafer shot 83 and 86, respetively, Braden Kreft finished with a 91 and Jordan Anderson carded a 105.
“We’re a different team, but I’m not gonna dumb down our schedule or my expectations,” said Carpenter. “This is our home course, the kids know this course, and our goal is to be in the top three at the sectional.”
Tristen Atwood led Wawasee with a 79.
Others in the Warriors’ lineup included Jeffrey Moore (80), Cal Heinisch (81), Mason Germanprez (86) and Rasmus Rich (97).
“We had too many big holes,” said Coverstone. “When you don’t play as well as you’d like, when you look back you’re gonna find some holes where you struggled. We had some bad holes today.”
Wawasee is in action again today against Tippecanoe Valley, while Triton is scheduled to play Bremen, Culver and Oregon-Davis Thursday.
Warsaw, in a scheduling change, will compete in a tournament in Carmel Saturday.
