Tigers Win First NLC Track Title Since 1992

MIDDLEBURY -ÊThe mad dash made by Warsaw's girls track team near the end of Wednesday's Northern Lakes Conference meet at Northridge High School paralleled the mad dash made earlier in the day by coach Paul Boyd.

Boyd left Warsaw at 3:30 Wednesday morning to drive to an 8:30 a.m. work-related meeting in Racine, Wis. He left the meeting and "hit the parking lot here at 4:15 in the afternoon."

With 11 of 15 events completed, third-place Warsaw trailed first-place Plymouth 81.5-61. But the Tigers outscored Plymouth 36-8 in the next three events to take a 97-89.5 lead. Plymouth took first and Warsaw second in the last event, the 1600 relay, but the Tigers scored more than enough to win the tournament. Warsaw scored 105, while Plymouth scored 99.5.

By placing first at the tournament and first during the regular season with a 6-0 record, the Tigers won their first NLC title since 1992. Boyd was named NLC Coach of the Year.

"It was a long day," Boyd said, "that culminated wonderfully."

Rounding out the team scores were Northridge with 80, NorthWood with 73, Concord with 71, Wawasee with 25 and Goshen with 11.5. Northridge won last year's meet.

Warsaw tallied the 36 points and rallied to win by placing two runners in the top six in three late events, the 800-meter run, the 200 and the 3200.

Warsaw's Summer Boyd won the 800 with a time of 2:24.53, and teammate Kim Kurosky took fifth. Claire Beckett placed second and Amy Robertson fourth in the 200. Hillary Barlow took second and Rachel Rondeau fourth in the 3200.

In those same events, Plymouth had a third place in the 800 and a fifth place in the 3200. The Pilgrims didn't place in the top six in the 200.

"Plymouth had one girl score in each event," Paul Boyd said, "but we had two score in several events, and that's where we got them. The 200 is what pushed us over the edge. Those were big points. We had a pretty good idea we would close this way."

Just how deep is Warsaw? Plymouth placed first in five events, but Warsaw won the meet with two first places. Besides Summer Boyd, Warsaw's other first came in the 400 relay. Jartu Schulterbrandt, Kim Love, Robertson and Beckett combined for a first-place time of 51.42 seconds.

Largely responsible for keeping Plymouth close was a freshman named Morgan Uceny. Uceny competed in four events and placed first in all four. She won the long jump (15-11 1/4) and 1600 (5:14.42) and was a member of the first-place 3200 relay (9:41.31) and 1600 relay (4:07.376) teams.

Plymouth, which went 3-3 in the NLC during the regular season, was considered the dark horse by the coaches. Paul Boyd scored the meet out beforehand and said he "had Plymouth winning it."

Last season the Pilgrims placed last with 28 points, so they nearly pulled off a worst-to-first scenario.

"We had a strong incoming freshman class, and some seniors who stayed with us through the rough times," Plymouth third-year coach Angie Stevens said. "I knew we had a chance to win, but everyone would have to perform well. Shot put hurt us. We had (Sandy Orsund) seeded first, and she placed fifth.

"I would be ecstatic no matter where we finished because it would be further ahead of where we were last year."

While the Tigers closed with a fury, Paul Boyd saw a few key performances earlier in the meet.

"We had a few girls step up - Erin Cook had a personal record (5-0, fifth place) in the high jump, and Chelsea Boyd taking second in the long jump, that was totally unexpected," Paul Boyd said. "Liz Wiggins coming out of the (slower) bracket and placing fifth overall in the 300 hurdles was outstanding. Jennifer Finch, she bettered her mile time by 12 seconds and still placed seventh. That shows you how competitive this meet is."

Freshmen were as competitive as anybody. While Uceny placed first in four events, Concord freshman Courtnee Falconer won three events. Falconer won the 100 (12.76 seconds), 400 (58.78 seconds) and 200 (26.96 seconds).

Falconer is so talented she appeared to lope and use little energy as she ran, while other girls in the races with her exhausted themselves in competing for a second-place finish.

"I don't think (Falconer) knows how good she can be," Paul Boyd said. "She hasn't even scratched the surface."

Two records weren't merely broken but obliterated.

Plymouth's 3200 relay team of Carin Benge, Rebecca Martin, Kourtney Beckham and Uceny set an NLC record with a first-place time of 9:41.31, smashing Northridge's 1996 time of 9:55.88. Warsaw, seeded first in the 3200 relay, took second and beat Northridge's time as well, finishing in 9:43.51.

Northridge's Natalie Ewing won the 3200 with a time of 11:31.5, beating Jolene Williams' time of 11:39.14. Williams, a former Northridge runner, recorded her time in 1994.

The 1600 relay, the last race, may have best showed how competitive Plymouth and Warsaw were. Plymouth won with a time of 4:07.376, while Warsaw took second with a time of 4:07.409. Uceny, trailing Summer Boyd for most of the last leg of the relay, lunged ahead of her at the finish line.

Paul Boyd didn't consider Warsaw the favorite the night of the tournament, scoring Plymouth as the winner. He didn't consider Warsaw the team to beat before the season, either.

"I knew we would be strong," he said. "Did I think we would win? No. At the start of the season I thought it would be Northridge. I knew we would be a contender.

"I hope this gets some kids out. We have 33 on the team and have only five freshmen. But as I often say, we have the right girls out."
