The top two teams in Saturday's boys golf sectional at Stonehenge, one has been a contender year in and year out, while the other advanced to the regional for the first time in years.

The host Tigers shot a four-man score of 317 to win their second consecutive sectional championship and fourth in the past five years.

The story of the day, however, - other than Triton's T.J. Carpenter winning with a 2-under 69 and Valley sophomore Trey Stoll finishing second with a 73 - was the Manchester Squires.

Manchester finished second with a 325, beating perennial power Wawasee, which finished third with a team score of 330.

"I tell the kids the same thing every year," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert.[[In-content Ad]]"One of our major goals is to get out of the sectional. We've knocked on the door with teams in the past. We've had some past teams that have been so close. I'm really proud of this golf team, and I know there's a lot of former Manchester golfers that are going to be proud of this team."

The top three teams from Saturday's sectional, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, will play in Thursday's regional at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne.

Asked if he knew the last time the Squires played in a boys golf regional, Goshert said he didn't know, but it was obvious by the number of smiles and snapshots Saturday that the Squires accomplished something.

"I guess it's been quite a number of years," said Goshert. "I've been the coach here for the past 11 years, I know it's been at least that long. All season long these kids have been good, old-fashioned grinders. They've been consistent all year long. It's a one-class system in golf, and being a small school, this is pretty exciting. Warsaw and Wawasee are bigger schools and very good year in and year out, and then there were some small schools that were good this year. We're very excited about playing in the regional."

Tippecanoe Valley, which shot a 160 on the front nine and trailed leader Wawasee by just two strokes, finished fourth with a score of 335.

Triton, led by individual champion Carpenter, was fifth after shooting 336.

Other teams in the 12-team sectional field included Culver Academy (344), Plymouth (346), Wabash (348), Southwood (353), Bremen (353), Culver Community (365) and Northfield (430).

The top three individuals were Carpenter, Stoll and Warsaw senior Tad Nieter, who led the Tigers with a 77.

The golfers that will play as individuals in the regional Thursday are Carpenter, Stoll, Southwood's Josh Teulker and Plymouth's Doug Booth.

Teulker and Booth both shot 78.

Carpenter's first-place round included an impressive 1-under performance on both sides, shooting 34 on the front and 35 on the back.

Stoll was 1-over on both sides en route to finishing second individually.

"He had three birdies today," Valley coach Roger Moriarty said of Stoll. "He went 36-37, 1-over on both sides. He's a consistent player. He's good at putting the ball in the middle of the fairway. Lately we've been working on his up-and-down game."

While the Vikings missed advancing to the regional by five strokes Saturday, they appear to be a team to look out for next year.

Moriarty will lose just one of his players, Brandon Stavedahl, to graduation.

Stavedahl, playing in the No. 1 spot for the Vikings, shot 83 Saturday.

Valley's other players include three sophomores and a freshman.

Caleb Rovenstine, a freshman, shot 86, while sophomores Kenny Campbell and Brenden Fields shot 112, respectively.

"Things looked pretty good through 13 holes," said Moriarty. "We just had a little trouble down the stretch. We did a lot of good things this year. This was our best season since 2001. We're a young team, we only lose one player. The kids worked hard all year and were very close to getting out. We're excited about next year and the year after."

Other scores for Warsaw, to go along with Nieter's third-place individual effort, were a 79 from Ryan Marose, an 80 from Ben Harris and 81s from Grant Slater and Corey Hensley.

Slater and Nieter are both seniors and four-year varsity players. Both were a part of Warsaw's state championship team in 2005.

Slater played in the No. 1 spot Saturday, while Nieter played in the No. 2 spot.

It's the three, four and five spots that fifth-year Warsaw coach Ben Barkey has been waiting on to produce.

Saturday he said he got that production from Harris, Marose and Hensley, a trio of juniors.

"What did it for us was our three, four and five guys," said Barkey. "We got good scores from our one and two, but our three juniors stepped up today. We've been waiting for them to do that, and today they did well. Our three, four and five guys are still getting better. We're not we're quite where we want to be, but we're getting better, that's the important thing."

For third-place Wawasee, Jordan Dawes shot a 78, followed by John Kirkwood (82), Curtis Coverstone (84), Michael Jenkins (86) and Reese Woodcock (86).

While Triton got an outstanding performance from Carpenter, the Trojans didn't turn in another score lower than 86.

Reggie Davis shot 86 for Triton, while Blake Schori shot 88, Erik Shafer finished with a 93 and Clint Woodward turned in a 95.
