Fueled by a 23-2 run in the second quarter, the Warsaw Tigers defeated Northridge 75-34 to keep their Northern Lakes Conference record unblemished.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter, but Northridge made a comeback and scored four straight baskets to take an 8-4 lead.

However, that was the largest lead the Raiders would hold. The Tigers fought back to tie the score at 10, and by the end of the quarter the score was knotted at 12-12.

"We hadn't played since last Tuesday," said Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst, "and we just didn't come out of the blocks."

The the wheels of the Northridge machine fell off.

The Tigers jump-started the second frame with Hilary O'Connell, Christy Colt and Jenna Rooney combining for eight unanswered baskets. Northridge's first points of the quarter did not come until the 6:00 mark when Gretchen Herto hit two free throws to make the score 20-14.

Then Warsaw's offense really kicked in. Colt, Sara Parker and O'Connell netted three consecutive three-pointers to increase the Tiger lead to 29-14.

But the Tigers were not finished. They allowed Northridge just one basket the rest of the quarter and went on to outscore the Raiders 29-4 in the quarter.

Warsaw went into the locker room with a 41-16 advantage.

"The second quarter was our best quarter," said Wienhorst.

The third quarter started much like the second as Warsaw scored the first four points of the quarter before allowing the Raiders a free throw. Nerecia Taylor scored the first eight Tigers points of the third frame to give Warsaw a 49-19 lead with 5:52 left to play.

Northridge went on a 7-0 run late in the quarter to reduce Warsaw's advantage, but at the end of the third stanza, the Tigers still held a hefty 55-28 lead.

Again, the fourth quarter was characterized by a run by the Tigers. With 5:30 left in regulation, Jenna Rooney hit a field goal to start a 12-0 scoring onslaught by the Warsaw squad. Eight of those 12 points were scored by Janna Knisely, who was 7-for-7 shooting in the game.

Alisha Warlick scored the last Northridge basket of the evening at the 2:25 mark, and Warsaw scored the last six points of the contest to earn a 75-34 victory.

"When you score a lot of points and get good shots like we did tonight, it's easy to overlook the defense," said Wienhorst. "Northridge has been scoring a lot of points, and our defense held them to just 34.

"The key to this team's success is that they believe they can win. When we believe in ourselves, we play well. More and more, the girls are believing in their teammates, and that is helping them be successful."

Taylor led the Tigers with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Knisely finished the night with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Two other Tigers chipped in double figures as well. Colt and O'Connell added 11 points each in the winning effort.

"Tonight we came out and played basketball," said Wienhorst. "We didn't play Northridge, we played basketball."

Warsaw improves to 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the NLC, while Northridge falls to 8-8 on the season and 1-4 in the NLC. The Tigers travel to Goshen tonight for another NLC matchup with a chance to secure at least a share of the conference title.
