Tigers Turn In Win Of Historic Proportions
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
The football game was not dramatic. Warsaw had more points in the first five minutes than Gary Wallace had fans in the stands.
In an offensive attack Warsaw has not seen the likes of since 1952 when the Tigers defeated Garrett 53-7, Warsaw scored early and often in Friday's 54-0 debacle of the Gary Wallace Hornets. Warsaw has not started the season 4-0 since 1992 when the Tigers won six games before losing to NorthWood in the seventh game of the season.
The Tigers started their offensive onslaught when Greg Seiss connected with Zach Nelson on a 51-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage.
On Wallace's first drive, the Warsaw defense pummelled the Hornet offense causing them to lose 11 yards on three plays.
Then the brothers Seiss connected for another Warsaw touchdown with 8:57 as Brad caught a 19-yard pass from Greg to put the Tigers up 14-0.
After Wallace's second drive led to a five yard loss and a punt, 6:37 remained on the first quarter clock and Gres Seiss hooked up with Ross Kesler for a 62-yard touchdown pass.
Just 16 ticks later, Aaron Chabot intercepted a Matthew Packett pass and returned it 30 yards for yet another Warsaw touchdown. When Justin Plank's fourth kick sailed through the uprights, Warsaw held a 28-0 lead.
However, the Tigers were not finished. They scored again with 5:08 still left in the first quarter when Greg Seiss and Kesler combined for another touchdown.
Then the coaches from both sides and the officials made an unusual decision near the end of the fourth quarter. They decided to have a running clock for the remainder of the game. The clock would stop only for timeouts or officials' requests.
"The officials and coaching staffs made the decision as a group," said Warsaw coach Phil Jensen. "It was best for everyone this way. They (Gary Wallace) had a long trip home. We have no less repsect for them, this was just the right thing to do."
Warsaw then decided to try to slow the game by running the ball in the second quarter. After one running play, Greg Seiss aired the ball out with a 43-yard pass to Kesler with 9:58 left in the half to put Warsaw up 42-0. On that play, Seiss threw his fifth touchdown pass and broke the school record for number of touchdown passes in a game set by Rob Reneker in 1979 against Wawasee.
By the end of the half, Warsaw had sent in most of its second- string players and scored another touchdown when Justin Miller ran 24 yards to make the score 48-0 in Warsaw's favor.
The Tigers scored their last touchdown of the night in the third quarter when Mike Moore finished an eight-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.
Although Warsaw defeated Gary Wallace 54-0, Jensen had good things to say about the Hornets.
"I have the utmost respect for Coach (Jason) Johnson, his coaching staff and his players," said Jensen. "They are tough. They played hard the entire game. They're in a tough situation."
Warsaw, now 4-0, will travel to Northridge Friday for the next Northern Lakes Conference game.
"I am proud of our kids," said Jensen. "They played with intensity, and emotion. They executed very well tonight. We'll get back to conference play next week. We have to be ready to play week in and week out."
