Sectional championships. Regional championships. The 2005 state championship.
Thursday, the 10th-ranked Tigers will be at home – literally.
Fresh off its fourth sectional title in five years and 26th overall, Warsaw will host an 18-team regional at Stonehenge.
Action gets underway at 8 a.m., and if the Tigers finish amongst the top three teams they will advance to the state finals for the eighth time in 11 years.
“It’s not like getting ready for Chestnut Hills or Orchard Ridge over in Fort Wayne,” said Barkey, whose team is looking to repeat as regional champions and score its third regional title in four years. “My guys are very comfortable playing at Stonehenge. We play here every day. That’s a huge advantage. Outside of Triton, there isn’t another team in the regional that is really familiar with the course.”
The Triton Trojans, who finished runner-up to Warsaw at the sectional, losing by a mere stroke, will tee off in the first group of the day at 8 a.m.
Warsaw begins its round at 9 a.m.
Led by Ryan Rapp’s medalist score of 3-under 68, Triton shot 315 at Friday’s sectional.
Quentyn Carpenter complimented Rapp’s round with a 72.
“I hope the weather stays nice, and the greens get super fast,” said Triton coach Jack Carpenter. “We’re familiar with the fast greens at Stonehnege. If you haven’t played there, it can be very tricky.”
Carpenter said he thinks Rapp is capable of another blistering round at Stonehenge, and that his son can go lower than 72.
The key for the Trojans to get to state is its Nos. 3, 4 & 5 golfers.
“Our 3, 4, and 5 guys have to step up,” said the veteran coach. “I think Ryan and Quentyn can be right there at the top (of the leaderboard), but it’s a lot more fun to take the whole team.”
At the sectional, Lucas Shafer shot an 87 for Triton, while Tanner Shepherd and Greg Music shot 88 and 95, respectively.
Jon Schram led Warsaw at the sectional with a 76.
While the Tigers didn’t have the super-low score Triton did, Warsaw won the sectional title with its depth.
Jonny Hollar and Evan Cultice fired 79s, while Will Petro and Tim Ahlersmeyer finished with an 80 and 84, respectively.
“This is the first regional this lineup has been in together,” said Barkey. “We’ve got some tournament experience, and we’ve got some guys playing in the regional for the first time. They’ve all worked hard. I’m blessed with not only talented kids, but also hard-working kids.”
Barkey said he could see a team score of 304 to 308 winning the regional championship.
While a regional title would be nice, the goal is to advance to next week’s state finals at The Legends in Franklin.
Other ranked teams in the 18-team field include No. 9 Bishop Dwenger, No. 13 NorthWood and No. 18 Carroll.[[In-content Ad]]
