"We are a very good team, we are just not always there mentally through the whole game," said Warsaw girls basketball coach Will Wienhorst.

Although the Tigers were not at the top of their game, they still picked up a 66-41 win over South Bend Clay Friday night in the Tiger Den.

Michelle DeGeeter and Jaclyn Leininger put Warsaw up 5-0 early in the first frame, but Clay clawed back and tied the score at 5-all when Tarrah Miller hit a basket and a free throw at the 3:54 mark.

Clay took its only lead of the game at the 3:21 mark when Monica Macellari hit a basket to put the Colonials up 7-6.

However, that lead was short-lived as Warsaw turned on its jets and went on an 8-0 run in the final 1:24 to take a 14-7 lead into the second frame.

The second quarter belonged to the Tigers, and specifically Leininger.

Leininger scored the first two baskets of the second stanza to put the Tigers up 19-7.

The Colonials stayed within 10 until the 4:52 mark. Then the wheels fell off for Clay.

At the 4:52 mark, Leininger hit a basket. As Clay was moving back down the court, Julie Seiss swiped the ball and nailed a lay-up of her own.

Seiss was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw. However, DeGeeter pulled down the rebound and dished it off to Leininger, who connected for yet another Tiger basket.

In a span of 25 seconds, the Tigers scored six points and found themselves up 27-11.

In the second quarter alone, Leininger scored 15 points on a 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. She was 1 of 2 from the charity stripe in the quarter.

By the end of the second frame, Warsaw extended its lead to 37-15.

Clay came out of the halftime break fired up and ready to play, and Melissa Gallant hit the first basket of the second half to make the score 37-17.

Clay outscored Warsaw 15-12 in the thrid quarter, but the Tigers still took a 49-30 advantage into the final quarter of play.

Warsaw got back on track as Seiss and Leininger teamed up to score the first two baskets of the fourth frame, giving Warsaw a 53-30 advantage with 7:09 left in the game.

The Tigers went on to outscore the Colonials 17-11 in the final stanza to pick up the 66-41 win.

Leininger finished the game with 32 points, in her 27th consecutive double-figure scoring game.

DeGeeter added 12 points for the Tigers, while Seiss chipped in nine and Rebekah Reichard scored seven. Kara Mayer netted four points, and Kim Clay had two to round out the Tiger scoring.

The Tigers hit just 11 of 20 free throws in the game, a statistic that concerns Wienhorst.

"I saw (Purdue men's basketball coach) Gene Keady speak, and he said that it doesn't matter how you throw it up there, 99 percent of free throw shooting is mental." said Wienhorst. "We need to improve on the mental part of our game right now."

Tarah Miller led the Colonials with 11 points.

The 2-1 Tigers host Fort Wayne Northrop Wednesday. Clay falls to 3-2 on the season.
